BOTA invites the BOTA Trainer of the Year 2023 Mike Reidy Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at NHS Grampian to talk about his experiences as an outstanding surgical trainer and his reflections on what it means to win BOTA TOTY 2023.
Emily Baird, TPD of South East Scotland deanery, will discuss how to transform and professionalise surgical training, in order to give trainers the recognition, time and resources they require to be excellent trainers.
Finally, BOTA will discuss how we can collaborate and work together to deliver the BOTA Top 5 Trainee Priorities 2024.

Emily Baird is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh, with an interest in paediatric trauma, and congenital conditions of the hip and foot. She trained primarily in the West of Scotland with Fellowships in Edinburgh and Toronto.
Emily is passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion in the workforce and broadening access to orthopaedics through mentorship and medical education. She is heavily involved in providing medical student education as an Undergraduate Lead, and Post Graduate Education as Training Programme Director for Orthopaedic Trainees in South East Scotland and examining for FRCS Tr & Orth.
She is the Chair of the Education Committee of The British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery, a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Faculty Member for Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons and Tutor for the MSc in Patient Safety and Human Factors.
She lives in Edinburgh with her husband and two young boys, and likes to dance and run!

Charmilie is a ST4 Trauma & Orthopaedic Registrar in South East London and is the current BOTA Education Representative. Charmilie is passionate about modernising medical education and advocates for equitable access to training opportunities for all. She represents the educational interests of Orthopaedic trainees at national surgical training meetings and is the Lead Convenor of the annual BOTA Academic Congress, the largest trainee led international orthopaedic conference.

Karen (she/they) is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialty Registrar in London on the Stanmore rotation. As BOTA President, Karen represents Orthopaedic trainees at national meetings, advocating to improve training and education opportunities for trainees. Karen campaigns for DEI in Orthopaedics and surgery to promote an environment in which surgeons and patients feel proud to be their authentic selves. They are passionate about creating cultural change in Orthopaedics, building a compassionate profession for the modern surgeon to deliver excellent care to our patients.
Consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital & Woodend Hospital
Mike is an orthopaedic surgeon based in Aberdeen. He trained at Glasgow University, undertaking higher surgical training in the East of Scotland before completing a fellowship at Alder Hey Children’s hospital. Since August 2019 he has held a consultant post at both the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and Woodend Hospital.
He specialises in paediatric orthopaedics with a focus on childhood hip and neuromuscular conditions. Passionate about education, he teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is involved in several national and international research studies and is an active member of British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery. In 2023 Mike was awarded both the Scottish and UK Trainer of the Year awards by The Scottish Committee for Orthopaedics and Trauma and the British Orthopaedic Trainees’ Association.
Outside of medicine, he is a Trustee for The Archie Foundation, which is a children’s health charity making the difference for local children in Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness and the surrounding areas. Outside of work Mike enjoys spending time with his family, cycling, and watching football and rugby."

I am a Trauma & Orthopaedic Specialty Trainee in Wessex, and the current BOTA Sustainability & Workforce Representative. I have worked with both the RCS England and BOA as a trainee representative on defining the scope of practice for PAs in both Surgery and in Trauma & Orthopaedics.
