Mr Fazal Ali has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee both in adults and in children. He works at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he is helping to set up a national referral service for these problems in children. He trained in Sheffield with a Knee Fellowship in Newcastle and a short Trauma Fellowship in New York. He is a former Training Programme Director for South Yorkshire and is presently the Vice-President of BOSTAA ( Britsh Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association) . He is Head of the Question Writing committee of the Intercollegiate Board.
He has published his work, written chapters and given invited lectures on training issues and knee surgery both nationally and internationally. He has co-edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ which is a best-selling orthopaedic text and is recently published in Chinese. He is the founder in 2007 of the largest clinical examination course worldwide: The Chesterfield and Sheffield FRCS Clinical course.
Fazal was voted ‘South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Trainer of the Year’ on five occasions. He was given a life-time award for training by the South Yorkshire training scheme in 2012. He was twice shortlisted by BOTA as one of the top trainers in the UK. In 2018 he was again voted Trainer of the Year, this time by East Midlands. In 2017 he was honoured by the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training Rotation by the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.
He serves as a senior examiner for the Intercollegiate Board in the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examinations. In 2017 he was elected to the panel of international examiners (FRCS International). Mr Ali also serves on the board of examiners in other countries with the view that this would help advance the standard of orthopaedic training worldwide.
Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder Surgeon, Wrightington Hospital
Professor Lennard Funk is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in shoulder surgery. After qualifying in medicine in 1990, Professor Funk pursued specialist orthopaedic training in clinics across the north of England, and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons in Glasgow in 1995. He was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Wrightington Hospital in 2006.Mazin Ibrahim is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in Hip and knee surgery. He trained in Trauma and Orthopaedics in London as part of the Northeast London rotation (UCH). Mr Ibrahim is a substantive lower limb arthroplasty and sports surgery consultant at the London Whittington Health and University College Hospital joint venture.
He completed two lower limb arthroplasty and sports surgery fellowships: the first at the renowned Rorabeck Bourne Arthroplasty Centre, part of the London Health Sciences Centre in Ontario, Canada; and the second at London’s University College Hospital. He was awarded many travelling fellowships including the European Hip Society travelling fellowship, EFORT Robotic Visiting Fellowship, The BOA’s Infection (Heraeus/Andrew Sprowson) fellowship, The Mark Paterson travelling fellowship (EFORT/BJJ) and EFORT/BOA Spring Travelling Fellowship.
He publishes scientific papers, has contributed to several books and presents at conferences nationally and internationally. He is an invited reviewer for the Bone and Joint Journal. He holds two master’s degrees in Orthopaedics. He won many national and international prizes. He is passionate about teaching and has a post-graduate degree in Medical Education. He teaches medical students, is invited Faculty on national courses, and holds a postgraduate certificate in Medical Education.
He is an advocate for day-case arthroplasty surgery and is interested in enhancing patient recovery. He considers robotic surgery an integral part of enhanced patient recovery.
Consultant Orthopaedic Sports Surgeon, Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust
Mr Neil Jain is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and the founder of UK Sports Medicine, a private practice focused on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries through innovation. He is able to offer keyhole surgery for a wide range of knee, shoulder and elbow injuries, in addition to administering non-operative treatments such as injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
Mr Jain originally graduated from the University of Southampton before undergoing basic surgical training in Plymouth. After graduating from a sports injuries and reconstructive arthroscopy fellowship at the world-renowned University of British Columbia in Canada, Mr Jain was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
Mr Jain is widely published in peer reviewed journals and medical textbooks, and has given over 100 presentations at national and international conferences. He has worked with a number of sports clubs and associations including Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, Barrow Raiders RLFC, Bury FC, University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, Vancouver Canadians (Baseball), Winnipeg Blue Bombers (American Football) and Vancouver Canucks (Ice Hockey). Mr Jain is actively involved in teaching and is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Salford. He is the current treasurer for BOSTAA
Consultant Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgeon , St George’s University Hospital, London
Miss Umarji has been a consultant at St George’s since 2008 and she is the current Clinical Director of Surgery. She sees and treats many high energy wrist injuries presenting to the MTC .
She has published on traumatic wrist injuries inc scapholunate and perilunate injuries. She is specially interested in sports injuries having played representative sports (rugby and cricket). She is one of the first female members of the MCC ( Marylebone Cricket Club).
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon , Cambridge university Hospitals NHS trust
I hold a full time consultant post in trauma and orthopaedics, based at Addenbrooke's hospital, part of the Cambridge university Hospitals NHS trust. I also consult and operate at the Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital.
I completed my primary medical training in 1993 at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. After moving to the United Kingdom in 1996, I completed my Basic surgical training at West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds and completed my Higher surgical training on the East Anglian orthopaedic rotation (Cambridge) in 2005. I undertook a fellowship predominantly in trauma at the Alfred hospital, Melbourne, Australia in 2006.
My particular areas of interest are disorders of the shoulder and elbow. I undertake arthroscopic and open shoulder and elbow surgery. Doing joint replacements of both the shoulder and elbow. I have been operating predominantly on the shoulder and elbow since 2006.
Trauma care is a particular area of interest, having established the Addenbrookes orthopaedic trauma unit a collaboration of orthopaedic surgeons dedicated to the care of the multiply severely injured patient.
