I trained in London, Oxford and Sydney and have been a consultant in North Devon since 2008. My clinical practice is in general trauma and shoulder & elbow surgery. Over the course of my career, I have held several leadership roles, starting as many people do, with rota management as a trainee. Some posts have been in medical education, and I spent several years as our Foundation Training Programme Director. I have had a number of operational management roles and am currently sharing an interim Medical Director post with a colleague, alongside being Deputy Medical Director for a large directorate. |

Paul Buckley retired from the General Medical Council at the end of 2020 after almost 25 years with the organisation, for 16 of which he was a Director and member of the Senior Management Team. In his most recent role he was responsible for the development of the GMC’s corporate strategy and overseeing its policy work including a major regulatory reform programme, and leading other key functions including Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, business planning, research and data. He was also a Director and Managing Director of GMC Services International Ltd, a consulting subsidiary. Paul now works in consultancy and non-executive roles in healthcare. In particular,in addition to his role with the BOA he is the independent chair of the Chief Executive Board of the Scope of Practice and Education partnership which is coordinating work to advance the counselling and psychotherapy profession for adults across six organisations. He was previously a member of the Citizen’s Partnership of the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch.Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Hiro Tanaka is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Newport, South Wales. He is passionate about improving the quality of surgical training and promoting clinical leadership in the NHS. He designed the BOFAS Principles Course on behalf of the Education Committee in 2010 and continues to be a member of the committee. He is Chairman of the Education and Revalidation Committee of the BOA and is an examiner for the FRCS (Orth).

Fergal Monsell graduated without distinction from the Welsh National School of Medicine. He completed higher surgical training at the University of Manchester and has been a Consultant at the Royal Hospital for Children, Bristol since 2004. He is involved in the management of paediatric patients with a special interest in limb deformity and trauma.
He has made a greater than average contribution to the canon of lower-level evidence and has been awarded degrees at Master and Doctorate level.
He has a longstanding interest in education, is Director of the Avon Centre for Musculoskeletal Education and Projector at the Grand Academy.

Patrick Thies is an Orthopaedic Physicians Associate (PA) with 24 years of experience - 16 years practicing in the US and eight years in the UK. With a military background, he spent 21 years in the US Army, the final nine years as a PA. He works at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.
Patrick's expertise spans a wide range, initially focusing on general orthopaedics including shoulder, hip and knee procedures, along with fracture care. Over the years, he has honed his skills and now assists in the hip and knee arthroplasty unit, with a particular emphasis on robotics.
His work extends across various healthcare settings, from wards to outpatient clinics and operating theatres, where he applies his extensive knowledge and expertise to provide exceptional care to his patients.

I am a Trauma & Orthopaedic Specialty Trainee in Wessex, and the current BOTA Sustainability & Workforce Representative. I have worked with both the RCS England and BOA as a trainee representative on defining the scope of practice for PAs in both Surgery and in Trauma & Orthopaedics.
