Specialty Standards (SpecS)
Specialty Standards (SpecS) are documents produced by a Specialist Society. They are recommendations, and relate to specific practices not necessarily applicable to the generalist surgeon.
Management of End Stage Ankle Arthritis
- April 2025
- End stage ankle arthritis is usually treated with Total Ankle Replacement (TAR) or Ankle Fusion (AF) and patients should have either option available. Outcomes may be improved with discussion in an ankle arthritis network and concentrating TAR to centres where they are regularly performed. This facilitates referral and communication, reduces clinical variance, and ensures equitable, cost-effective access to high quality care.
Peri-Prosethetic Joint Infection
- April 2024
- Peri-prosthetic joint infection (PJI) can be devastating for patients and expensive to treat. Definitive treatment pathways require coordinated, multidisciplinary input from specialist infection treatment centres to achieve optimum patient outcomes. Initial management is considered in the relevant BOASt and the purpose of this document is to advise on the definitive management, irrespective of anatomical site.
