BOA response to UK budget statement

Mark Bowditch, President of the BOA, comments on the Government’s budget statement today 30th October 2024:

'The additional funding should of course be welcomed, but as the Government rightly acknowledges, it will take more than just one Budget to turn the NHS around.

'The Spring Spending Review must support the forthcoming NHS 10-year Plan if the improvements in efficiency and quality of care for patients are to be sustainable.

'Dedicated surgical hubs, the use of the independent sector and other such initiatives must be supported by: ‘ring-fenced beds’ for those trauma and orthopaedic patients who do require longer care, fit for purpose adult social care services to both prevent some patients being admitted to hospital as well as enabling their discharge and a focus on training tomorrow’s surgeons, so desperately needed to meet the needs of our growing older, working and more active population.'
