Are you using the National Consultant Information Programme (NCIP) portal?

‘The National Consultant Information Programme (NCIP) provides a single point of access to locally and nationally benchmarked NHS surgical activity and outcomes data for consultants, Medical Directors, Responsible Officers and specialty Clinical Leads. It is a free, secure online portal supporting surgical quality improvement and consultant learning and development.

The ambition is to develop NCIP into a single repository covering the whole practice of a consultant, across the NHS and private sector.

If you have not already done so, I urge you log-in and explore the NCIP website.’

Dear Colleague,

I hope this message finds you well. Many of you will be aware of the National Consultant Information Programme (NCIP) – a free NHS tool designed by clinicians, for clinicians, and supported by specialist associations such as the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), the British Society of Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery (BSCOS), the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS), and others.

This message is to remind you that NCIP is here to help you understand and demonstrate your surgical practice and to encourage those of you who haven’t used it yet to log-in and have a look at your data.

NCIP provides quick and easy access to your clinical data, helping you track your activity and identify opportunities to enhance patient care.

With NCIP, you can:

Review your own surgical activity and trends – See your case volumes, demographics, procedure types, and patient outcomes in one place.

Compare against national benchmarks – Understand how your activity aligns with your peers and identify areas of strength and opportunity.

Track changes over time – Observe patterns in your practice, spot variations, and make data-driven decisions.

Support your appraisal and revalidation – Access clear, standardised data that meets the ‘GMC guidance on supporting information for appraisal and revalidation’ to demonstrate your impact and progress.

Strengthen your Clinical Excellence Award applications – Use measurable evidence to showcase your contributions to patient care and service improvement.

Identify potential areas for sharing innovative practice – Spot trends that could support innovation in your department.

You should have previously received an email with your NCIP log-in link. If you can’t find it, just email [email protected] or contact our Orthopaedics Lead directly at [email protected] and we’ll re-send your details.

Visit our website to explore how NCIP can support you. If you have any questions, we’re happy to help.
