Mr Achan is a former clinical director at Barts Health NHS Trust, current programme director of the Percivall Pott Orthopaedic Training programme, and convenor for several training courses at Barts & The Royal London and Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore

His practice focuses on lower limb joint preservation surgery, arthroscopic intervention, primary, complex primary and revision joint surgery

In 2009, Mr Achan was one of two upcoming ‘Best of British’ surgeons chosen to represent the British Hip Society Travelling Fellowship to the USA

BOTA President and Specialist Registrar, North East London deanery (Stanmore Rotation)

Oliver Adebayo is a Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery Specialist Registrar in the North East London deanery. He has a subspecialty interest in both limb reconstruction and sports injuries and has an MSc in Surgical Innovation from Imperial College London. Oliver graduated from King's College London in 2013 and undertook his foundation training in the South Thames Foundation School. He was a London School of Surgery Core Surgical Trainee prior to commencing his specialty training in trauma & orthopaedic surgery on the Stanmore Orthopaedic Rotation. As president, he works closely with RCS England, RCSEd, JCST, BOA, T&O SAC, T&O SDG and ATDG to ensure that T&O trainees throughout the UK are fully represented. Oliver is keen to champion sustainability and innovation in surgery. Furthermore, he and the BOTA Committee remain focused on improving the culture, diversity and inclusivity within T&O, innovation in surgical education and sustainability in surgery.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Southmead Hospital, Bristol

Mr Ahearn is a surgeon specialising in knee surgery and major trauma. His elective practice is exclusive to knee surgery. He has experience in cartilage, meniscal, and ligament injury repair and reconstruction, and treats both early and advanced knee osteoarthritis.

He was trained in the Severn Deanery and has MTC consultant experience in Coventry and Bristol. He has a particular interest in periarticular knee trauma, and has developed skills in management of complex lower limb trauma.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Kings College Hospital, London NHS Trust & Kings Diabetic Foot Unit

Raju has been awarded the Hunterian Professor from the Royal College of Surgeons, in clinical decision making in diabetic foot surgery. As a consultant orthopaedic trauma & foot and ankle surgeon working at King’s College Hospital London and undertake foot & ankle, diabetic foot and lower limb reconstruction surgery and the Major Trauma Centre care. His practice is divided between foot and ankle limb reconstruction; an elective practice including arthroplasty, diabetes foot surgery and major trauma. The common threads being the need for limb salvage and manging bone infection and critical void defects. 

He is clinical lead for bone infection, and holds an NIHR HTN grant and clinical lead in national and international studies, working with organisations such as BOFAS, BOTA, D-FOOT and OTS. He is a member of the International Diabetic Foot Care Group, working with D-Foot International and has sat on the Executive committee member of the Diabetic Foot Study Group executive committee (DFSG).

ST8 Northwest Deanery, Salford Royal NHS Trust in Manchester

Sadia Afzal is an ST8 in the northwest deanery, with an interest in trauma, limb reconstruction and overseas work, currently working at Salford Royal NHS Trust in Manchester. Sadia is heading up the Prosthetic Hip Dislocation Study (PHD Study), alongside the Northwest Trainee Collaborative (NWORC), supervised by Professor Board based in Wrightington Hospital.

The PHD Study is a national service evaluation project endorsed by BOTA, looking at how prosthetic hip dislocations are managed across the UK with the aim to help to inform future guidance and consensus on management.

Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon, Northern General Hospital, Sheffield

Amjid Ali has been a Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield since 2008.

He graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1996 and did his General Surgical and Specialist Orthopaedic training in Sheffield. He undertook his specialist Shoulder and Elbow Surgery training in Sydney, Australia and in The Shoulder and Elbow Unit at The Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

His specialist interests include shoulder & elbow trauma and revision elbow arthroplasty.

Amjid is actively involved in teaching and training. He is a faculty member on a number of local, national and European courses teaching physiotherapists, GPs, Surgical Trainees and other Consultants about the assessment and treatment of shoulder and elbow problems.

He is an FRCS (Trauma & Orth) Examiner, Deputy TPD for Yorkshire and Humber (South) and Clinical Director of MSK Services at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Sheffield Children's Hospital

Fazal Ali has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee in the adult and the child. He works at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. He trained in Sheffield and undertook Fellowships in Newcastle and New York. He is a former TPD for South Yorkshire and is presently the Academic Secretary of BOSTAA. He is Head of the Question Writing committee of the Intercollegiate Board.

He has published his work, written chapters and given invited lectures on training issues and knee surgery both nationally and internationally. He has co-edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ which is a best-selling orthopaedic text and is transated into Chinese . He is the founder in 2007 of the largest clinical examination course worldwide: The Chesterfield and Sheffield FRCS Clinical course.

Fazal was voted regional Orthopaedic ‘Trainer of the Year’ on six occasions. He was given a life-time award for training by South Yorkshire in 2012. He was twice shortlisted by BOTA as one of the top trainers in the UK. In 2017 he was honoured by the South Yorkshire Training Rotation by the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.

He serves as a senior examiner and Board Member for the JCIE in the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examinations. In 2017 he was elected to the panel of international examiners. Mr Ali also serves on the board of examiners in other countries.

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford

Abtin is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford (NDORMS). He graduated from University of London (Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine). After completing basic surgical training on the prestigious Hammersmith surgical rotation, he began higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Oxford programme in 2008. He took three years out of programme to undertake a PhD (DPhil) as the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit Fellow at the University of Oxford. His DPhil was titled “Improving Surgical Learning and Performance at Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty”.

Abtin was appointed as NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017. He undertook two post-CCT sub-specialist clinical fellowships focusing on complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford (NOC) and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). He was then appointed in Oxford as a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon. Clinically, he has a specialist interest in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, revision knee arthroplasty, and peri-prosthetic joint infection.

Sanjeev Anand

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Sanjeev Anand works in the specialist knee unit at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He has a tertiary-level practice in soft tissue knee and knee reconstructive surgery, including paediatric knees.

He is the President-elect for the British Indian Orthopaedic Society and Academic Secretary to the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association. He is also an executive member of the British Patellofemoral Society. He is the Executive director of the International Society for Knowledge for Surgeons on Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty (ISKSAA) and is the Executive Editor of the Journal of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery. He has led the development of the UK’s national guidelines for ACL reconstructions. He has also contributed to the development of national guidelines for arthroscopic knee meniscus surgery and patellofemoral problems. For his contributions, he received the British Association for Surgery of the Knee President’s Medal in 2023.

Tony Andrade

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading

Mr Tony Andrade, MBBS, FRCS (Tr&Orth), is a consultant Orthopaedic, Hip and Knee Surgeon at Circle Reading Hospital. He graduated from the London Hospital Medical College and was a surgical trainee in the Wessex region of the South of England before being fellowship trained in hip and knee surgery at Sportsmed-SA in Adelaide, South Australia, where he first learned hip arthroscopy. He was also fellowship trained in trauma surgery at the Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, USA.

Mr Andrade has a specialist interest in the Young Adult Hip, having established a hip arthroscopy service in Reading, in 2002, and is widely considered to be a UK pioneer of hip arthroscopy. He is a board member of ISHA – The Hip Preservation Society and is on the Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry (NAHR) user group for the British Hip Society. 

He is regularly invited to lecture nationally and internationally on hip preservation topics, and to teach on national and international hip arthroscopy and arthroplasty courses. He has multiple publications in peer reviewed journals on these topics.

ST8 Trauma and Orthopaedics, BOTA Education Representative

Adrian is an ST8 on the Yorkshire and Humber rotation and is the current Education Representative for BOTA. Throughout his training Adrian’s focus has been on promoting and developing educational and mentorship opportunities for trainees.

Adrian was a T&O Core Trainee Representative for North West in 2017-2018, BOTA Regional Representative for North Yorkshire in 2019-2021 and was elected Education Representative for BOTA in 2021-2022.

As the BOTA Education Representative, his main role is the organisation of this year’s BOTA Annual Congress scheduled to take place in November 2022. He also sits as the BOTA representative on the BOA Education and Careers Committee, Royal College Surgeon Learning Committee and HEE Training in the Independent Sector Committee.

Adrian is passionate about medical education and he is actively engaged in supporting trainees to achieve the highest standards of both training and clinical care in light of the recent challenges to training progression and CCT.

Nick is an upper limb surgeon, focussing mainly on disorders of the shoulder and elbow. He is both a Clinical Lead and the Deputy Network Director at Barts Health. He is the current Vice Chair of the BOA Orthopaedic Committee, having served as a member for two years. During his training he spent a year working as a fellow to the National Medical Director and continues to be involved in various national streams of work . He is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at QMUL and is active in various academic projects. When not in the world of Orthopaedics, he can often be spotted cycling around Hertfordshire.

Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon (Hip and Knee) and Honorary Senior Lecturer at QMUL, The Royal London Hospital

Miss Arshad is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery and pelvic and acetabular trauma.

Miss Arshad is the Lead Clinical Surgeon in the Trauma and Orthopaedics department at the Royal London Hospital. She teaches as international faculty for AO and the London Pelvic FRCS Viva course and is a National instructor of Advanced Trauma Life Support instructors. Since returning to London, Miss Arshad has been appointed as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and tutor for the International Orthopaedic Trauma Sciences MSc at Queen Mary University of London.

She is Chairman of the consultants’ committee at the Royal London Hospital. Her professional practice is based on hip and knee arthroplasty and the identification and management of problems affecting the hip or knee.

Elizabeth Ashby is a Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultant.  She attended medical school in Cambridge, did her orthopaedic training in London and completed a fellowship in Montreal, Canada.  She worked as a consultant at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital before returning to where she started – Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.  Elizabeth enjoys all aspects of Paediatric Orthopaedics with a particular interest in limb and foot deformity.

Consultant Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Tumour Surgeon, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and the East Midlands

Professor Robert Ashford was appointed at Leicester as a Consultant Orthopaedic & Musculoskeletal Tumour Surgeon in 2008, working jointly at Nottingham University Hospitals, following fellowships in Sydney and at the RNOH. He is the lead clinician of the East Midlands Sarcoma Service. He clinical practice is orthopaedic oncology and lower limb arthroplasty.

His research interests are metastatic bone disease, palliative orthopaedic surgery, genetics of soft tissue sarcoma and outcome measures in sarcoma. He was co-chair of the BOOS working party on surgical management of metastatic bone disease.

He was chosen as an ABC travelling fellow in 2014 and in 2019 he was both promoted to Honorary Professor at the Leicester Cancer Research Centre and elected President of the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society. He is grateful that Saracens have ensured Leicester Tigers have avoided relegation
