Ghulam Abbas

Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon, Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Mr Ghulam Abbas is a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is a fellowship trained spinal surgeon. After completing his higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedics in Yorkshire, he sub-specialised in spinal surgery. Abbas did his spinal surgery training at Nottingham, Leeds and Sheffield spinal units.

Abbas is currently President of British Pakistani Orthopaedic Society (BPOS)

Alwyn Abraham

Training Programme Director T&O, Consultant (Adult Trauma / Paediatric Orthopaedics), University Hospitals of Leicester

Alwyn has spent 17 years on the Trauma and Orthopaedics front line as a Consultant. The highs and lows of working in the NHS notwithstanding he remains a committed clinician, HST TPD for T&O, trainer and FRCS examiner. Clinically, he particularly enjoys the challenge of salvaging infected, traumatised, and deformed limbs in his chosen field of Limb Reconstruction. Unusually for an orthopod, he is committed to quality communication and the acceptance of human factors in medical teams. He lists an eclectic mix of influences in this regard such as Nobel Laureate, Daniel Kahneman's Masterpiece Thinking, Fast and Slow, but equally, The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey. His support of the marginalised has driven his enthusiasm for several interesting projects. This has included his advocacy of CSTs as Training Programme Director, the genesis of a Trust Foundation Doctors Programme for Internationals Medical Graduates and the creation of a Trust registrar programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics culminating in CESR. Alwyn is particularly proud of his role as the co-founder of the Leicester Gondar Orthopaedic Partnership, conceived in 2017. This is a partnership between University Hospitals of Leicester, University of Leicester, and the University of Gondar (Northern Ethiopia). In collaboration with Rotary International USD 200k was raised and has led to a partnership to develop orthopaedic infrastructure in Northern Ethiopia where up to 7 million people are without the very basics of orthopaedic care.Alwyn has spent 17 years on the Trauma and Orthopaedics front line as a Consultant. Pramod Achan

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Barts Health NHS Trust

Mr Achan is a former clinical director at Barts Health NHS Trust, current programme director of the Percivall Pott Orthopaedic Training programme, and convenor for several training courses at Barts & The Royal London and Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. His practice focuses on lower limb joint preservation surgery, arthroscopic intervention, primary, complex primary and revision joint surgery. In 2009, Mr Achan was one of two upcoming ‘Best of British’ surgeons chosen to represent the British Hip Society Travelling Fellowship to the USA. 

Joy Adamson

RCS Chair in Surgical Trials & Health Sciences, University of York

Professor Joy Adamson is RCS Chair of Surgical Trials and Health Research at one of the nice RCS Clinical Trial Centres at University of York. Joy is an experienced methodologist with a broad range of methodological expertise, encompassing trials; epidemiology; qualitative methods and mixed method research. She has been applying this skill set to a range of applied health research projects over a number of years. Her current role is to work with surgeons to generate high quality research evidence, with a focus on orthopaedic surgery. 

Irrum Afzal

Honorary lecturer, Imperial College, BOSTAA Committee, OREF Non-Executive Board Member, NOA Director's Award, SWLEOC London

Irrum graduated with a distinction from Imperial College London. Irrum is MICR, MRQA, and a Master of Public Health qualified researcher. Irrum has both research and management experience. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in Sustainability Studies and has successfully completed both the PRINCE2 Practitioner and Foundation exams.

Irrum holds multiple positions of responsibility, including being a professional member of the Research Quality Association (RQA) and a professional member of the Research Ethics Committee for the Health Research Authority (HRA). Irrum regularly attends HRA meetings, actively providing her expert opinion and guidance on research ethics and governance.

Irrum is an honorary lecturer at Imperial College London, an active member of the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma & Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA) Committee, BOSTAA Research Committee in line with the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), and is the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity Lead for BOSTAA. Additionally, Irrum is a Non-Executive Board Member of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF).

Irrum has published in various peer-reviewed journals and frequently presents at national and international meetings. Irrum most recently received the National Orthopaedic Alliance (NOA) Director’s Award.

Nate Ahearn

Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant, Knee Surgery , South Devon and Torbay NHS Trust

Nate Ahearn is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Torbay Hospital. His practice encompasses general orthopaedic trauma, with an interest in periarticular and periprosthetic fractures around the knee, and an elective practice focused exclusively in all aspects of knee surgery balancing a predominantly soft tissue and arthroplasty practice. He is a keen trainer with an interest in medical education and is a member of the Academy of Medical Educators. He also has a role as a BOA Culture and Diversity champion and works with Melanin Medics as a Lewin programme ambassador. After medical school at Imperial College, he completed surgical training in the Severn Deanery and enjoys maximising the outdoor lifestyle and work life balance achieved by living in the South West.

Raju Ahluwalia

Adham Ahmed

Consultant Urologist, West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, Vice Chair of the BAUS Section of SAS and Trust Urologists

Adham Ahmed is a Locum Consultant Urologist at the West Suffolk Hospital since November 2023. Prior to that, he worked for 7 years at Cambridge University Hospital as a Junior then a Senior Clinical Fellow. He has been elected as Vice-Chair of the newly formed SAS and Trust Urologists Section (SSTU) of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) for 2 years after which he will be automatically promoted to chair in January 2026. He is Faculty Lead for the bi-annual Online FRCS Urol Mock Viva Day and is co-chair for the BAUS Portfolio Pathway course

Imran Ahmed

Orthopaedic Registrar, Warwick Orthopaedic Rotation

Imran Ahmed, Orthopaedic Registrar on the Warwick Orthopaedic Rotation, previous NIHR doctoral research fellow at the Warwick Clinical Trials Unit and RCS Hunterian Professor for 2024.

Having completed Undergraduate training at Imperial College London, Imran completed an Academic Foundation post at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire before securing a highly competitive Academic Clinical Fellowship supervised by Andrew Metcalfe. During this post he completed a range of research projects working closely with the Warwick Clinical Trials Unit obtaining several publications and international presentations. Following this post he was successful in obtaining a NIHR doctoral research fellowship grant to complete his PhD at the University of Warwick.

His award winning PhD thesis was titled ‘The treatment, expectations and outcomes of patients aged 18 to 55 with a meniscal tear of the knee.’ This work was supervised by Prof Andy Metcalfe, Andrew Price, Charles Hutchinson, Sophie Staniszewska and Nick Parsons. As part of this work, Imran set up and completed a multicentre national cohort study (the Meniscal tear outcome study (METRO). Several of his chapters have been published and he has gone on to present the findings at national conferences winning a presentation award at BASK 2023. His Hunterian lecture will focus on key findings from his thesis and the implications of this work for clinical practice.

Kash Akhtar

I studied medicine at Imperial College, graduating with a Distinction in Surgery. I was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2005 and the Fellowship (FRCS) in 2011.

I have undertaken a Masters in Medical Education (for which I was awarded a Distinction) and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree. I have given over 100 international presentations, and have received multiple prizes and awards.

I completed my subspecialty fellowship in all aspects of knee surgery (sports injuries, trauma and joint replacement) at the renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.

I was also awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Fellowship and spent 6 months in international centres of orthopaedic excellence across the USA.

I am appointed as a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knees at Barts Health NHS Trust, one of the busiest hospitals in the country, which receives complex tertiary referrals from a broad area.

I am also appointed as a Reader in Orthopaedic Surgery & Surgical Education at Barts and the London School of Medicine & Dentistry. I am an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

I am the Training Programme Director for the prestigious Royal London Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery rotation and a member of the Executive Committees of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the Specialist Advisory Committee to the Joint Committee on Surgical Training.

Fazal Ali

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital

Mr Fazal Ali has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee both in adults and in children. He works at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he is helping to set up a national referral service for these problems in children. He trained in Sheffield with a Knee Fellowship in Newcastle and a short Trauma Fellowship in New York. He is a former Training Programme Director for South Yorkshire and is presently the Vice-President of BOSTAA ( Britsh Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association) . He is Head of the Question Writing committee of the Intercollegiate Board.

He has published his work, written chapters and given invited lectures on training issues and knee surgery both nationally and internationally. He has co-edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ which is a best-selling orthopaedic text and is recently published in Chinese. He is the founder in 2007 of the largest clinical examination course worldwide: The Chesterfield and Sheffield FRCS Clinical course.

Fazal was voted ‘South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Trainer of the Year’ on five occasions. He was given a life-time award for training by the South Yorkshire training scheme in 2012. He was twice shortlisted by BOTA as one of the top trainers in the UK. In 2018 he was again voted Trainer of the Year, this time by East Midlands. In 2017 he was honoured by the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training Rotation by the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.

He serves as a senior examiner for the Intercollegiate Board in the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examinations. In 2017 he was elected to the panel of international examiners (FRCS International). Mr Ali also serves on the board of examiners in other countries with the view that this would help advance the standard of orthopaedic training worldwide.

Abtin Alvand

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC)

Abtin Alvand is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) in Oxford. He is one of the highest volume revision knee surgeons in England based on the National Joint Registry. He graduated from University of London and completed his higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Oxford programme. He also completed a PhD (DPhil) at the University of Oxford which was titled “Improving Surgical Learning and Performance at Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty”.

Abtin was appointed as NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017. He undertook  post-CCT fellowships focusing on complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford (NOC) and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). He was European Bone & Joint Infection Society (EBJIS) Travelling Fellow in 2017 and also completed a fellowship focusing on peri-prosthetic joint infection at the Rothman Institute (Philadelphia, USA). He is a member of the Bone and Joint Infection Registry (BAJIR) steering committee as well as the Executive Committee member for the 2025 International Consensus Meeting for Prosthetic Joint Infection.  Abtin's clinical and research interests focus on peri-prosthetic joint infection and revision knee arthroplasty.

Sanjeev Anand

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr Sanjeev Anand works in the specialist knee unit at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He has a tertiary-level practice in Soft tissue knee and knee reconstructive surgery including paediatric knees.

He is a founder member and Academic chair for the International Society for Knowledge for Surgeons on Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty (ISKSAA) and is the Executive Editor for Journal of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery. Mr. Anand has led in developing national guidelines for ACL reconstructions. He has also contributed to the development of national guidelines for arthroscopic knee surgery and patellofemoral problems.

He is currently the Education secretary for the British Indian Orthopaedic Society and an executive member of the BOSTAA and British Patellofemoral Society.

Adrian Andronic

ST8, Yorkshire and Humber rotation, BOTA Vice-president

Adrian is an ST8 on the Yorkshire and Humber rotation and is the current BOTA Vice-president. Throughout his training Adrian’s focus has been on promoting and developing educational and mentorship opportunities for trainees.

Adrian was the T&O Core Trainee Representative for North West in 2017-2018, North Yorkshire BOTA Regional Representative North Yorkshire in 2019-2021 and was elected BOTA Education Representative in 2021, BOTA Treasurer in 2022 and more recently BOTA Vice-president in 2023.

Adrian sits on multiple committees, including JCST, ISCP, and BOA Orthopaedic Committee. He has also served on the BOA Education and Careers Committee, the Royal College of Surgeons Learning Committee, and the HEE Training in the Independent Sector Committee.

Adrian is passionate about medical education and is actively engaged in supporting trainees to achieve the highest standards of both training and clinical care, especially in light of recent challenges to training.

He was a speaker for the BOA Education & Careers Committee on the topic, "Can high-quality patient care co-exist with the erosion of training standards?"

Alex Aquilina

Academic Clinical Lecturer and specialist Trainee Registrar in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, The University of Bristol and Severn Rotation

Alex is a specialist trainee registrar in trauma and orthopaedic surgery on the Severn Rotation while pursuing his research interest as an NIHR Clinical Lecturer at the University of Bristol. After reading medicine at the University of Bristol, Alex completed an Academic Foundation Training Programme before being appointed to an Academic Clinical Fellowship at the University of Warwick. Following an MSc in Medical Sciences, Alex undertook a DPhil with the Oxford Trauma research group, leading a National Institute of Health and Research (NIHR) registered multi-centre study. This study developed a Core Outcome Set (COS) for patients recovering from open lower limb fractures, identifying what and how outcomes should be measured in future clinical research and audit. Following the publication of Alex’s DPhil project, he was named a Bone and Joint Research Journal featured author in June 2023. Currently, Alex is working on developing a COS for periprosthetic femoral fractures. He recently became a National Hip Fracture Database Fellow and was selected as the BOA Associate Surgical Specialty Lead elect.

James Archer

Trauma and Orthopaedic Registrar, The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital

James is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialty Registrar working in the West Midlands as part of the Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Programme. His career aspirations include a career in arthroplasty and revision arthroplasty.

He is the current Academic Officer for the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA) and has worked to develop and support trainees in their academic and research pursuits. He is a strong advocate for collaborative research and the important role trainees can play in research trials.

Nick Aresti

Nick is a Consultant at Barts Health working across the Royal London and Whipps Cross Hospitals, where he specialises in shoulder and elbow surgery. He is the Deputy Clinical Network Lead for Orthopaedics at Barts Health and is also a Clinical Lead. He has been on the Orthopaedic Committee for two years and was recently appointed to the Vice Chair position. Nick trained on the Percivall Pott rotation and spent a year as a fellow to the National Medical Director.

Homa Arshad

My professional practice is in pelvic and acetabular trauma surgery and primary, complex and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. I have an interest in unusual or challenging hip and knee replacement surgery and arthroplasty as an immediate solution for traumatic injuries and fractures.

I graduated from Cambridge University and trained on the prestigious Percivall Pott Rotation.
Completed revision hip fellowship in Norfolk, working with John Nolan, and fellowships in Germany with Professor Michael Raschke, Head of AO, and in Denmark with Professor Kjeld Sobelle who pioneered minimally invasive periacetabular osteotomy.

Current ATLS instructor, teaching also on the national instructor’s faculty course and an active recruiter of new faculty. Also teaches as faculty for AO, the Orthopaedic Trauma Society and the London Pelvic Course.
Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and tutor for the International Orthopaedic Trauma Sciences MSc at Queen Mary University of London and a reviewer for BJJ.

2022 was recruited to the Women in Surgery Working Party against Sexual Misconduct, following my publications relating to dysfunctions in four regions of the UK.

Research interests include patient outcomes, pelvic and acetabular trauma and enhanced recovery.

Jamal Ashraf

President, Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association

Dr. Jamal Ashraf is a trauma and arthroplasty surgeon with an extensive career spanning over 24 years. His commitment to advancing orthopaedic surgery is evident through his active involvement in academic and professional circles. He has delivered faculty lectures in over thirty countries, sharing his insights and advancing global understanding of complex lower limb, periprosthetic and pelvi acetabular trauma.

Currently, Dr Ashraf serves as the President of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA), where he leads initiatives to enhance orthopaedic practices and education across the region. His leadership extends to his previous role as President of the Asia Pacific Trauma Society, where he championed advancements in trauma care. Additionally, he is a dedicated Council Member of AO Trauma India, contributing to the organization’s mission of improving trauma care and outcomes in the country.

He is a die-hard Manchester United fan.

Vipin Asopa

Consultant hip and knee surgeon, SWLEOC London

Mr. Vipin Asopa PhD FRCS (Tr & Orth) is a consultant hip and knee surgeon based at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre. He has completed a PhD in Articular Cartilage Biology at the Kennedy Institute, before completing his higher orthopaedic surgical training in North West London and fellowship training at Sportsmed.SA, Adelaide and The Royal Berkshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He has received Orthopaedic Research UK funding to investigate the optimal conditions for harvesting stem-cells from adipose tissue. Additionally, Mr. Asopa is a Python coder and primary investigator for a study titled, ‘The use of Machine Learning in the early detection of failing total hip replacements.’. This is a project that is also being supported by ORUK.

Armughan Azhar

Mr A. Azhar is a Consultant in Hand and wrist surgery at the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), a major trauma centre where he handles complex cases in Hand and Wrist surgery alongside other specialities.

Throughout his career, he has cultivated a strong passion for teaching and research, contributing significantly to the academic and clinical development of future orthopaedic surgeons.

Mr. Azhar serves as a Speaker, Mentor, and Faculty member for the British Orthopaedics Association's FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) Clinical Examination Course, where he plays a crucial role in preparing candidates for the rigorous FRCS examination. His commitment to education extends further as a Course Faculty member for the Postgraduate Orthopaedics FRCS (Tr & Orth) Revision course at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, affiliated with Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne.

In addition to his roles at these prestigious institutions, Mr Azhar is also a Faculty member for the Chesterfield, Sheffield, and Derby FRCS Clinical Examination Course, a program that offers high-quality clinical examination teaching to senior orthopaedic trainees. His expertise is further recognised through his contribution as an author of a chapter in the “Orthopaedic Examination Techniques” book, a key resource for FRCS (Trauma & Orth) exam preparation.

Amer Aziz

Amer graduated from King Edward Medical College Lahore in 1980. FRCS Ed FRCS Glasgow May/ June 1985, MSc Orth London Sept 1987 FCPS Orth 1989 MCPE HPE 2010. Trained 1982 - 1987 Oswestry and Stanmore 1987 - 2002 AP, Assoc Prof and Prof Orthopaedics Punjab govt.

Resigned in march 2002 aged 46 from government job and started orthopaedic and spine set up in Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital April 2002 until now - a 250 bedded 10 modular, ORs made in Germany and the only AOspine recognised spine training centre.

 250 FCPS Orth so far and fellows from 12 countries to date. Best orthopaedic training centre by POA 2023. Every orthopaedic subspecialty under one roof: trauma musculoskeletal and spine dealt with within 24/48 hrs, ILIZAROV Scoliosis, MISS tubular endoscopic and UBE TB spine standalone cage, paediatric orthopaedics, foot and ankle mark Myerson unit, hand and upper limb sports injuries, CP Polio neglected trauma, arthroscopic surgery, limb lengthening, tumours surgery, Cyberknife Pain management,  joint replacements (hip, knee, shoulder, elbow).

All subspecialties headed by foreign fellowship trained consultants FCPS Orth approved centre FCPS spine. The only approved centre for this, the second two year fellowship programme in Pakistan, 6 professors, 3 Associates, 8 APs ,5 SRs and 50 FCPS trainees at any one time. Fellows for spine arthroplasty, trauma, paediatric orthopaedics, ILIZAROV Foot and Ankle, Sports injuries, arthroscopic surgery and hand. 12000 major ops per annum and did not take a day off in COVID-19 Pandemic.

Emily Baird

Consultant in trauma and orthopaedic (T&O) surgery, Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh.

Emily Baird is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh, with an interest in paediatric trauma, and congenital conditions of the hip and foot. She trained primarily in the West of Scotland with Fellowships in Edinburgh and Toronto.

Emily is passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion in the workforce and broadening access to orthopaedics through mentorship and medical education. She is heavily involved in providing medical student education as an Undergraduate Lead, and Post Graduate Education as Training Programme Director for Orthopaedic Trainees in South East Scotland and examining for FRCS Tr & Orth.

She is the Chair of the Education Committee of The British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery, a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Faculty Member for Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons and Tutor for the MSc in Patient Safety and Human Factors.

She lives in Edinburgh with her husband and two young boys, and likes to dance and run!

Mr Bajaj completed his orthopaedic training in London (Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital South East Orthopaedic Training Programme). He also undertook paediatric orthopaedic fellowships at Sheffield Children Hospital and Royal National Hospital in Stanmore. He has also been a travelling foot and ankle fellow in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

Tim works at the Centre for Hip Surgery, Wrightington Hospital where he is lead for Lower Limb Research. He is also a Visiting Professor in Orthopaedics at the University of Leeds, Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Manchester and Honorary Professor at Salford University. His clinical interest is complex primary and revision hip arthroplasty and hip arthroscopy. He has developed a collaboration with Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, performing THR in children.

Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Leeds Teaching Hospitals since 2002, having completed surgical training in Bath and Bristol and following fellowship training in the Ilizarov method at the Ilizarov Scientific Centre in Kurgan, Russia.

Mr Britten’s clinical practice includes the treatment of severe lower limb fractures and post-traumatic limb reconstruction including non-union, mal-union and deformity, limb length inequality, bone loss and amputation.

Current President of the British Limb Reconstruction Society and Chair of the British Orthopaedic Association Medico-legal Committee.

In 2018 Mr Britten was awarded the taught degree of Master of Laws with Distinction in medical law and ethics by De Montfort University Leicester.

Adrian Brooke

Medical Director for Workforce Alignment in the Workforce, Training and Education Directorate of NHS England and Honorary Professor at the University of Leicester Medical School

Adrian Brooke is Medical Director for Workforce Alignment in the Workforce, Training and Education Directorate of NHS England and Honorary Professor at the University of Leicester Medical School.   

He chairs the workforce group on the cardiovascular, respiratory and stroke strand of the NHS WT&E Long Term Conditions Programme, co-chairs the Expansion and distribution of Medical Specialty Training Programme, the Medical and Dental Recruitment Selection Programme Board and involved closely with the Long-Term Workforce Plan training investment programme.

He was appointed as Head of the Paediatric Specialty School by East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery in 2011 and was Secondary Care Dean and Deputy Postgraduate Dean from 2013, before being Postgraduate Dean for Health Education England East Midlands in 2017. He was past Lead Dean for allergy, immunology, stroke, core medical training and the newly established internal medicine training programme. He was appointed as NHS-HEE Deputy Medical Director of Workforce Alignment in 2019.

Rick Brown

Rick Brown is the Clinical Lead of the Foot & Ankle Unit at The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford and Immediate Past President of BOFAS. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical lecturer for the University of Oxford and is passionate about Foot & Ankle education, having  initiated the BOFAS Principles of F&A Surgery Course in the UK, India and across Africa. While a Registrar he worked in Angola and Eritrea with HALO  and has operated in Cameroon in a Club Foot Team. He is a lifelong member of WOC. For over 12 years, he has been an Examiner for the FRCS (Tr &Orth) and is now an Assessor of the Examiners. This experience he is sharing with COSECSA, while sitting on the Orthopaedic Exam Panel.

Lt Col Ben Caesar

Lt Col Caesar qualified as a doctor in 1998 and set out to pursue a career in Trauma and Orthopaedics from his time as a junior house officer in London. He undertook basic surgical training in Edinburgh and higher surgical training in Oswestry, during which time he was BOTA President, obtained his doctorate from Imperial College, his fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England, and membership of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Whilst he was on his post-CCT fellowship year training in Derby and London, he joined 256 City of London Field Hospital as a Reservist and passed out from RMAS in January 2012 before starting as a Consultant at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. He was appointed as a substantive consultant at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital from where he deployed on Herrick 18 with 33 Field Hospital. Upon his return, he applied for a transfer of commission and returned to RMAS in 2015 before being posted to 33 Field Hospital and was posted to Brighton for his clinical placement, where he remains today. He has been deployed subsequently on Op Trenton, Op Shader and Op Pitting during this time and spent the last 6 years at 16 Medical Regiment in 127 Medical Squadron. He posted this summer to JHG SE

His interest in burnout was triggered by the foundation of the Chavasse Clinic in Brighton for Service Personnel and Veterans, and his subsequent exposure to numerous patients with PTSD, anxiety and depression, and a realisation that a similar but subtly different issue was affecting his colleagues and himself. Upon further research, he discovered the literature around burnout and moral injury in healthcare workers and has published and presented his work both nationally and internationally in this field. He has just completed work with colleagues from the Compassionate Leadership Academy and Mindalpha delivering a research driven programme, Compassion for Healthcare Workers, which has demonstrated statistically significant improvement in participants Compassion Index (CI) and statistically significant decreases in their Brighton Burnout Inventory (BBI) scores, which he co-developed, which is unique in including psychological safety as part of its analysis of burnout.

Donald Campbell

Donald Campbell was born in Vancouver Island, Canada and emigrated to Scotland where he spent his formative years. He graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School in 1993 and trained around most of Scotland, including his Trauma and Orthopaedics (T&O) rotation in the East of Scotland. He completed two years of fellowships in paediatric T&O in Glasgow and Sheffield. He was appointed as a consultant in Ninewells Teaching Hospital in Dundee in 2007, where he treats a broad range of paediatric conditions with a particular interest in the foot and the ankle, including some adult F&A work. He has a keen interest in training and was the East of Scotland T&O Training Programme Director for 6 years. He is now the TPD forum chair for the UK and Ireland and a FRCS T&O examiner. He is also a SAC liaison member for the JCST and sits on the BOA education committee.

Clare Carpenter

Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff

Clare has been a Paediatric Orthopaedic consultant at the Noah's ark Children's Hospital for Wales in Cardiff, since 2012. There is no greater job satisfaction than the generality of paediatric orthopaedics and trauma, coupled with the reward of treating children. Cardiff has been a major trauma centre for children since September 2020.

She has been actively involved in education since a junior trainee and this has culminated in her appointment as Training Programme Director in August 2023 to the Welsh Deanery. A role which she finds a privilege and energising to constantly be in touch with training and the trainees.

Recently she has become a BSCOS committee member to try and contribute to the Paediatric Orthopaedic community across the UK.

Anna Chapman

Anna Chapman is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals, Coventry and Warwickshire, with a specialist interest in Foot and Ankle surgery.

She qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’s Hospitals School of Medicine in London and completed her Orthopaedic training on the Warwick rotation. She undertook Fellowship training in Bournemouth and Bristol, and was appointed as a Consultant in 2012. 
She completed a Masters Degree in Medical Education at the University of Warwick in 2010 and continues to pursue her interest in all things educational.

Anna is currently the Lead Training Programme Director for the West Midlands and is the Portfolio Pathway Lead for the T&O Specialist Advisory Committee.  She has served two terms on the BOFAS Education Committee (2015-2023) and is currently the Lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for BOFAS. 

Salma Chaudhury

Salma is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Cambridge University Hospital Trust who specialises in Shoulder and Elbow trauma, sports injuries and shoulder replacements. She is triple fellowship trained from international recognised centres of shoulder excellence, having trained at Oxford, Cambridge and Reading, and spent a year during training at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She was awarded the BESS Travelling Fellowship. Her Trauma and Orthopaedics higher surgical training was completed in Oxford, and she studied medicine at Cambridge University. 

Salma is committed to producing the highest quality research to offer patients the best evidence-based, compassionate care. She was awarded a PhD in Orthopaedic Surgery from Oxford University, for her studies of rotator cuff failure and repair strategies to improve healing. To date she has been awarded £450,000 in research grants, including an ORUK early career research fellowship, and has published widely. She is the associate editor for Bone and Joint Journal 360, and was previously the social media editor for Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. She currently sits on the British Elbow and Shoulder Surgery Research Committee and was previously Executive Committee member for British Orthopaedic Research Society. 

Teaching has always been important to Salma and she was the co-director of orthopaedic teaching for Oxford University undergraduate medical students for 4 years. She has taught widely on courses such as the Oxford University Orthopaedic MSC course, shoulder and elbow cadaveric courses in Cambridge and ORUK FRCS Revision courses. She has regularly lectured internationally and nationally, including teaching in China and Palestine.

She has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to improving training for all doctors as well as patient outcomes, reflected in her wide-ranging work on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives. Some of her key previous roles include:

Karen (she/they) is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialty Registrar in London on the Stanmore rotation. As BOTA President, Karen represents Orthopaedic trainees at national meetings, advocating to improve training and education opportunities for trainees. Karen campaigns for DEI in Orthopaedics and surgery to promote an environment in which surgeons and patients feel proud to be their authentic selves. They are passionate about creating cultural change in Orthopaedics, building a compassionate profession for the modern surgeon to deliver excellent care to our patients.

Callum Clark

Consultant Orthopaedic Foot Ankle Surgeon, Frimley Health NHS Trust

Callum Clark is a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon and Clinical Lead for Foot and Ankle surgery at Frimley Health NHS Trust, and also works in private practice at the Windsor Foot and Ankle Clinic and the Fortius clinic. He is chairman of the BOFAS Education Committee and has run a popular post-CCT fellowship since 2007. He has a wide range of clinical interests, particularly sports injuries, deformity correction and ankle arthroplasty, and has also published and presented on a wide range of topics.

Nick Clement

Orthopaedic Consultant, NHS Lothian Hospital Trust

Mr Nick Clement is an orthopaedic consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (UK), and his clinical practice focuses on hip and knee arthroplasty.

He has been awarded a PhD for his work looking at the outcome of total knee arthroplasty, and an MD for his research defining fracture epidemiology and outcomes in elderly and super-elderly patients.

He has recently been appointed as the Clinical Lead for orthopaedics for the Chief Scientist Office in Scotland, and is Chair for research for the Scottish Committee for Orthopaedics and Trauma (SCOT). In these positions he hopes to help to promote and support research projects across Scotland, and to establish national and international collaborations.

He is the author of over 350 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters, and believes that only through collaboration can true orthopaedic science progress.

His recent publications in relation to robotic assisted surgery suggest that patient outcomes following hip and knee arthroplasty may be improved with the adoption of such technology. Whether this is a cost effective intervention in the NHS is however not clear.

Jemima Collins

Jemima is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Care of Older People. In her previous role as a post-doctorate Academic Clinical Lecturer, she developed an interest in clinical research in ageing populations with chronic pain. She is currently leading two grants exploring pain phenotyping and the experience of pain, in people living with dementia. Further work in this portfolio will include observational and interventional studies in pain in people living with frailty. Clinically, Jemima is a Consultant Geriatrician at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.

Tom Cosker

Consultant Surgeon, Oxford Sarcoma Service, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Director of Surgical Anatomy, University of Oxford

I am the course convenor and organiser of Miller UK (www.millerfrcs.co.uk) an international course to prepare candidates for the FRCS (Tr & Orth). This draws on the skills of 75 world famous surgical tutors. I am the course lead for the Anatomy Section of the course and have already taught over 1,000 surgeons on the course.

I have established the Oxford Anatomy Library of 3d Anatomical Models and 3d printing hub at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. I have raised in excess of £100k towards this aim from Nuffield Hospitals Fund. Three primary models have so far been developed; the retroperitoneum, the renal tract and the upper GI tract. These are proving extremely popular with our medical students and junior doctors. We are progressively extending the range of models to cover the entire human body and are currently working on a highly accurate model of the Base of Skull. This is ground-breaking science which combines CT, MRI and cutting edge 3d-printing. It is a hugely innovative and important project.

I am actively implementing Hololens Augmented Reality software in partnership with Case Western Reserve University at the University of Oxford. The first headsets are scheduled to arrive shortly following a successful grant from the Nuffield Hospitals Fund and we will work to test this material and innovate new learning modules with our senior medical students and surgical trainees. This will be a first in the UK and will help reinforce the importance of Anatomy for our future surgeons. We are currently developing modules specifically aimed at sarcoma tumour pathology which will educate medical students and allied healthcare professionals as well as potentially act as a surgical adjunct in theatre

Becky is a GP specialist working in gynaecology and an academic GP with an interest in violence against women. As a survivor of domestic abuse as well as sexual harassment and assault at work she advocates and campaigns to end the culture of misogyny in healthcare. From lecturing at Oxford University to medical students on domestic abuse, writing and publishing scientific papers, national and international speaking, and charitable work she has worked to bring a focus to violence against women in the healthcare sector. From sharing her own experience of sexual violence and abuse she recognises the power of survivor stories in bringing forth change.

Julie Craig

Julie Craig is the SAS representative on the BOA education & careers committee.

She works as an Orthopaedic Specialty Doctor in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Julie graduated from Queen’s University in Belfast, and has since completed a Master’s degree in Clinical Education at Queen’s University, and a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University. She is now an undergraduate educational lead for fractures for Queen’s University Belfast.

She teaches quality improvement and leadership skills to doctors in the Belfast Trust as part of the QI faculty.

Julie has a special interest in clinical data analysis and project design and is the Belfast Trust’s specialty improvement lead for their fracture inpatient database. She is also the Northern Ireland representative on the NHFD advisory group and a member of the RCP’s FFFAP committee.

Julie’s publications include peer-reviewed journals and chapter contributions to a trauma and orthopaedic nursing textbook. She has received prizes for Best Presentation at the British Trauma Society, Best Abstract at the Irish Hip Fracture Database Annual Meeting, the Bone and Joint Journal Prize, and a “highlight paper” at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.

Chris Crome

Chris Crome is a Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. His specialist interests consist of hip arthroplasty, revision hip arthroplasty, lower limb trauma and limb reconstruction, including limb lengthening, non-union, deformity correction and orthoplastics.

Chris graduated from St. George’s Hospital Medical School in 2011, before completing Foundation Training in Aberdeen, and Core Surgical Training in Sussex. He completed his higher Orthopaedic Training in the West of Scotland, before undertaking fellowships at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow, and the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

Chris is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, the British Limb Reconstruction Society and sits on the Surgical Education Board for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Professor Sir Paul Curran

Sir Paul was appointed Chair of the National Joint Registry in May 2022.  President of City, University of London from 2010 to 2021, he served previously as Vice-Chancellor of Bournemouth University and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton.  A former academic at the Universities of Sheffield, Reading and Swansea, a NASA research scientist at Ames California and advisor to the European Space Agency, his research on environmental Earth observation has focused on climate change.

He is Chair of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, a Director of the Universities Superannuation Scheme and President of the Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry Society.  He was Chair of the national Review Body on Doctors’ & Dentists’ Remuneration, Universities & Colleges Employers Association and The Conversation UK and was also a Member of the Natural Environment Research Council, Quality Assurance Agency, London Higher and Universities UK.

Sir Paul holds the degrees of BSc (Sheffield), MBA (Southampton), PhD and DSc (Bristol), Honorary DSc (Grand École ESCP, Paris & Peter the Great University, St Petersburg) and was Knighted in the 2016 New Year Honours for ‘services to higher education’.

Anna is a specialist Clinical Negligence and Court of Protection barrister at Parklane Plowden Chambers. In 2020 she was appointed as a Fee-Paid Judge of the First Tier Tribunal, assigned to Health Education and Social Care (Special Educational Needs and Disability).

She is recommended as a leading barrister by the Legal 500 for Clinical Negligence. The guide describes her as ‘very pragmatic in her advice and pleadings which helps to cut through a lot of the complexities of medical negligence’.

Since 2019 Anna has been a tutor on the medical ethics module for University of Leeds medical students.

Mark Davies

Since January 2006, Mark has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sheffield University Teaching Hospitals, UK. He qualified from the University of Southampton in 1993 and undertook basic surgical training in London, Oxford and Swindon prior to commencing Orthopaedic training in Sheffield. He is both Fellowship trained in Limb Reconstruction techniques (Sheffield) and in elective Adult Foot & Ankle surgery (Brisbane). In education, he has been voted Orthopaedic Trainer of the Year by the South Yorkshire trainees and contributes to teaching and training nationally and internationally. He is actively involved in implant design and has a specific interest in additive manufacturing processes for custom solutions. He has published extensively on many aspects of foot and ankle surgery. He is the current President-elect of British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (BOFAS) and a former Chairman of Sheffield Orthopaedics Ltd.

Barry Davison

Physiotherapist, Hip Preservation ESP, NHCT, Northumbria, Northumbria Healthcare

Barry works as an extended scope physiotherapist working in specialist spine and hip orthopaedic clinics at Northumbria Healthcare NHS trust. His clinics involve seeing both new and review cases with application of clinical assessment and diagnostic work up. Another element of these clinics involve reviewing post operative patients and guiding their rehabilitation journey.

He has extensive experience having worked across multiple areas of musculoskeletal practice including professional sport. His specialist area of interest is young adult hip pathology, specifically dysplasia. This has resulted in his project of developing a young adult hip clinical pathway, patient education resources and MDT training programme. He is a member of the British hip society, ISHA and BASS.

Sebastian Dawson-Bowling

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Barts Health NHS Trust

Sebastian is an orthopaedic consultant at Barts Health NHS Trust. After graduating from Cambridge University, he undertook orthopaedic training in London, culminating in fellowship training at RNOH Stanmore. He also spent time at the HSS in New York. He is predominantly based at the Royal London Hospital, where he specialises in complex revision hip and knee arthroplasty, as well as working within the major trauma service. From 2017-22 he was clinical network director and ICS chair for orthopaedics for the northeast London region, leading on the development of both the regional elective hub and spoke network, and the specialist fragility fracture service at Whipps Cross. He continues to act as BHS revision network lead for the region.

He is actively involved in implant design, and sits on both Editorial and Regional Clinical Coordinator committees of the National Joint Registry. He also holds a Masters degree in Medical Law, and acts regularly as an expert witness in both negligence and personal injury cases.

In addition to his own clinical work he is passionate about training, running a highly sought after revision arthroplasty fellowship, and has previous receiving the Percival Pott regional trainer of the year award. He was cofounder and inaugural honorary president of both LUOS (London Undergraduate Orthopaedic Society) and BOMSA (British Orthopaedic Medical Student Association). He has co-authored three postgraduate orthopaedic textbooks.

Celine De Silva

I graduated from the University of East London with a first class degree in B.Sc. Physiotherapy in 2019 and I am passionate about providing community care globally. I completed 3 years of rotational positions with Central London Community Healthcare (CLCH), where I engaged with the Race Equality Network (REN) and facilitated BME student experience groups.

While working within the Learning Disability (LD) service I completed a QI project to improve access to group exercise sessions for clients with mild to moderate LD. I have worked in Zambia, and Lusaka for 6 months supporting a quality improvement (QI) project under the improving global health fellowship with Health Education England (HEE) where I was supporting the development of the national blood transfusion service.

I became a tortoise mum to my pet Taco in 2020 and love to stay active through yoga and netball. I am committed to improving equality, diversity, and inclusivity and passionate about supporting the quality of service delivery within low-resource settings. 

Kelly de Stadler

Dr. Kelly de Stadler is a Foundation Year 2 doctor currently based in Bath at the Royal United Hospital. Whilst at Imperial College London, her passion for orthopaedics took off during her third year after attending the LUOS conference and has only grown since. She’s been involved with the British Orthopaedic Medical Students’ Association (BOMSA) since it was founded and has attended plenty of orthopaedic conferences and workshops as well as getting involved with many teaching opportunities.

Recently, Kelly decided to shift to a less-than-full-time role, giving her more flexibility to build her portfolio, teach, and focus on her personal growth. She’s passionate about orthopaedics and loves sharing that enthusiasm with students who are just as curious about the field. She is especially interested in paediatric orthopaedics as a subspecialty due to its rewarding and interesting work as well as broad scope of practice.

When she’s not working, Kelly enjoys staying active, spending time with friends and family, and mainly traveling whenever and wherever she can. Her most recent travels were to Africa for a month at the end of her FY1 as the first time returning since she moved from South Africa in 2011 and is considering an F3 year here!

Having qualified as a Doctor in 1993 I have over 25 years of Orthopaedic experience. I trained in at the internationally renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore where I was the Senior Surgical Officer and awarded the Seddon Society Medal for research. There I trained with some of the leading hip and knee replacement surgeons in the UK. My fellowship year was spent in London training in minimally invasive techniques and rapid rehabilitation.  In 2008, in Fife, we set up one of Scotland's first Enhanced Recovery Programmes. Since then we have visited several national and international centers, learning new techniques of enhanced recovery including Day Case Arthroplasty Programs. This learning culminated, in August 2018, when we performed the first Day Case Hip Replacement in Scotland. The Day Case Arthroplasty programme has gone from strength to strength and now 25% of all my Total Hip Replacements are successful Day Case discharges. The median LoS for all of my patients is one day and the average LoS <1.5 days.

From 2016 to 2020 I was Chair of the Scottish Committee of Orthopaedics and Trauma and sat on the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association. 

Since 2017 I have been the Clinical Lead for Major Trauma in South East Scotland. 

Since 2019 I have sat on the council of the British Association of Day Surgery. 

Since 2021 I have been specialty adviser to the CMO of Scotland.

Martin Gargan was educated at St Peter’s School, York as a York City Scholar.  He went up to Oxford to study medicine in 1978 after a spell at the Webb School of California as an English Speaking Union Scholar.

He graduated in 1984 and gained his FRCS in 1988. His Orthopaedic training was on the Oxford rotation but included Fellowships as the General Motors/Royal College of Surgeons Trauma Fellow in Detroit and at the Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street before being appointed as a Consultant in Bristol in 1994.

Alberto Gregori

Alberto has been involved in LMIC activity since he worked as a Mission General Officer in Zimbabwe in 1985. He worked in Lebanon during the 2nd Camp War in the 80s and in Zambia on Fellowship before a career as an NHS Arthroplasty and Trauma Surgeon. He won the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal Proxime Accessit in 2005. He has published over 100 papers in his research interests which include lateral tenodesis in ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair, MPFL reconstruction, joint fluid analysis, chondral replacement and  simulation training of knee surgeons.

His time as captain of Oxford University and professional cricketer in 1995/6 has given Chinmay added insight into the unique needs of sportsmen in returning to sport after injury; experience that he brings to bear in his clinical practice.

Pierre Guy

Professor of surgery and clinician-scientist, President, Canadian Orthopaedic Association

Dr. Pierre Guy is a Professor of surgery and clinician-scientist in the Department of Orthopaedics, at the University of British Columbia, where he is Academic Head of the Division of Orthopaedic Trauma. He heads the Clinical Department of Orthopedics at Vancouver General Hospital and UBC Hospital. His medical training and residency were completed at McGill University, followed by orthopaedic trauma fellowships in Hannover and Berlin, Germany and at UBC. Dr. Guy also holds a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University. He is the 2023-2024 President of the Canadian Orthopedic Assocciation.

He is a practicing Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon at BC’s level 1 Trauma Centre, Vancouver General Hospital. He is an active member of the Orthopedic Trauma Association and a founding member of the Canadian Orthopedic Trauma Society.

 Dr. Guy’s research is focused on hip, pelvis and acetabulum fracture treatment, fracture prevention, and post injury function. He collaborates with Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers and Materials Engineers to study hip and pelvis fractures and to develop novel technologies, including minimally invasive techniques and navigation. He also pursues clinical research trials and health services research, and aims to develop precision medicine tools. Stephen Guy

Trauma & Sports Knee Surgeon, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Stephen Guy was appointed as a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon in 2011 after finishing two prestigious knee fellowships. Locally, he has recently moved from trauma lead to driving improvements in ‘silver trauma’ with lead roles in hip fracture, fragility fracture and bringing the virtual fracture services online. He also chairs the Yorkshire sports knee meetings that he set up in 2012. 

Since commencing at his trust he has helped commence an award winning acute MSK service - with now daily sports clinics with SEM / Physio specialists input feeding into his sports knee clinic - all with same day MRI. This has been part of a PhD project. 

He has ongoing multiple research interests and has supervised MSc and PhD projects. Currently has ongoing links with Leeds University, Manchester Metropolitan University and Bradford University. 

He has a complex knee practice and treats both elite athletes in many sports to the aging weekend-warrior (to whom he has a warm affinity!). He remains a keen athlete, sports club captain and sports coach.

Simon has worked in a regional centre for over 25 years, with a practice spanning hip and knee replacement, trauma and spine surgery in public and private practice. He has been the Orthopaedic Head of Department at Taranaki Base Hospital, Trainee Supervisor and Chair of the Credentialling Committee. Prior to the Presidency, Simon was engaged with the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association Council for many years in his role as a Councillor, Chair of the Education and Training Committee and in the Presidential Line. Seb Ho is a Trauma & Orthopaedic Specialty Registrar on the East of England rotation. He trained at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine in 2015 before undertaking his Core Surgical training at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and then commencing higher surgical training on the East of England rotation.

Simon Hodkinson

Simon trained in London at St Bartholomew’s Hospital from 1977-82.

He was a Royal Naval cadet as a medical student so after house jobs in London and the Navy he spent the next two and a half years on General Duties in the Royal Navy.

After a crash course in all sorts of medical disasters he might face at sea, he went to the Falklands and Antarctica for the best part of a year before spending the second year in general practice in a Naval base.

Simon started his surgical training within the Navy in 1986 and in 1990 joined the fledgling HEMS project at the London as one of the original three Drs flying on the helicopter.

His higher training took him out of the Navy to Edinburgh and Leeds before being appointed a Consultant in the Navy in 1995.

Deployments to Cyprus, Bosnia and the Gulf intermingled with his early career and he then left the Navy in 1999 to join the NHS in Portsmouth.

In the NHS he developed his fledgling interest in foot and ankle surgery, which rapidly became him chosen speciality as the department expanded.

After a period as clinical director in Portsmouth his interest in education started as the RCS Tutor and progressed to being the Training Programme Director for T&O in Wessex for 8 years and membership of the SAC for 5 years.

His involvement with the BOA began with being elected to the Training Standards Committee, as was and then the Education committee.

Elected as a Trustee in 2017 he became Honorary Secretary in 202O and then elected to the Presidential line in September 2021.

Jonathan Hutt

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, University College London

Jonathan is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Specialist Hip Surgeon who specialises in all aspects of hip surgery. 

He studied medicine at New College, Oxford and Imperial College before completing his orthopaedic training in London. This was followed by fellowship training in lower limb reconstruction at the Université de Montréal in Canada and in young adult hip surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. In 2022 he was awarded the prestigious Rothman-Ranawat travelling fellowship by the American Hip Society.

His specialist interests are in all forms of hip surgery. He is experienced in advanced joint preservation techniques such as minimally invasive periacetabular osteotomy and hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) as well as hip reconstruction for other causes of hip pain in young patients.

When preservation of the joint is not possible, he is experienced in hip replacement using both the direct anterior (DAA) and posterior approaches to the hip.

​He has a particular interest in young patients with hip problems and joint replacement in active individuals. He is involved in innovation and research in advanced hip preservation techniques as well as emerging hip replacement technology and implants to improve patient outcomes. 

Mazim Ibrahim

Mazin Ibrahim is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in Hip and knee surgery.  He trained in Trauma and Orthopaedics in London as part of the Northeast London rotation (UCH). Mr Ibrahim is a substantive lower limb arthroplasty and sports surgery consultant at the London Whittington Health and University College Hospital joint venture.

Kate has worked in sports and exercise medicine for 20 years training initially as a GPSI then as a SEM specialist in 2013. She’s worked in many areas of sport and exercise medicine including NHS MSK clinics, the English Institute of Sport, the MOD, team travel with England Netball and England Hockey and at London 2012. Kate was a Bath University SEM examiner and a clinical researcher in SEM at Oxford University for 5 years. Most recently she was the Academy and Women’s Doctor at Oxford United Football Club where she saw first-hand the physical, psychological and social impact of ACL ruptures in youth players. This sparked her interest in ACL injury prevention and in particular in the widespread use of a structured, evidence-based, injury prevention warm-up to reduce ACL injuries at all levels of sport. 

Power Up To Play is a charity initiative (Charity registration 1182851). Set up in 2019 with the aim of providing free education and injury prevention training to coaches in grassroot sports clubs. We now have over 120 ambassadors/trainers across the UK and would love to have more! We would ultimately like to see a generational shift in injury prevention warm-up at grassroot level where it is the norm rather than the exception! Mr Neil Jain is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and the founder of UK Sports Medicine, a private practice focused on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries through innovation. Bilal Jamal

Bilal Jamal is a trauma, foot, ankle and limb reconstruction surgeon who is based out of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow where, alongside his plastic surgical colleagues, he leads the orthoplastic service for the west of Scotland.

Bilal qualified from the University of Aberdeen in 2006 following which he completed surgical training in Glasgow. Bilal was the recipient of the prestigious European Foot and Ankle Society travelling fellowship in 2015 which led him to visit centres in Heidelberg, Lyon and Verona. Further fellowship experience was gained in Sheffield and Edinburgh.

Hannah James

ST8, NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer, Warwick Clinical Trials Unit

Hannah James is an ST8 on the Warwick Rotation and current NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at Warwick Clinical Trials Unit. She completed an award-winning PhD investigating patient benefit from cadaveric simulation for postgraduate T&O trainees.

Hannah’s research expertise is in modelling surgical learning curves and measuring the impact of training using patient-level outcomes. She applies clinical trials methodology to test complex educational interventions and is developing an international reputation as a leader in this interface research field.

She was awarded the RCS Hunterian Professorship in 2023 for her translational educational research work, which she is continuing to develop as a Clinical Lecturer. Hannah is a member of both the NIHR Education Incubator and RCS Specialist Advisory Network in Clinical Education.

Mr Simon Jameson is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon with an expertise in: primary hip and knee replacement, revision hip and knee replacement including reconstruction after failed trauma, peri-prosthetic joint infection and management of metastatic bone disease around the hip.

Simon’s research interests include: outcomes after joint replacement including influence of implant characteristics, management of peri-prosthetic joint infection and venous thromboembolic prophylaxis after hip and knee replacement.

Kassim Javaid

Professor of Osteoporosis and Adult Rare Bone Diseases, NDORMS, University of Oxford

Professor of Osteoporosis and Rare Bone Diseases, University of Oxford and an honorary consultant adult rheumatologist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

He specializes in common and rare metabolic bone diseases. He is the clinical lead for Oxford Fracture Prevention Service, and the national Fracture Liaison Service Audit for England and Wales and serves on the Board of the Fragility Fracture Network. He also is the clinical lead for the Oxford Rare bone disease service for adults and Rare Disease Collaborative Network for Adult Rare Bone Diseases. His research interests include the epidemiology of musculoskeletal diseases with a focus on rare bone disorders and secondary fracture prevention.

Rav Jayasuriya

ST7 T&O, Paediatric Spinal Deformity Research Fellow, PhD Student, Sheffield Children’s Hospital

Rav is an ST7 T&O trainees on the Sheffield rotation. He was the first appointed NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Tr&O in South Yorkshire. He has worked in multiple areas of the University of Sheffield, most recently at ScHARR as a PhD student and a Co-Applicant on an NIHR RCT. He is aspiring to be fellowship trained in adult and paediatric spinal surgery, and has been appointed as one of the Brisbane Spinal Fellows for 2026.

Paul Jermin is an elective knee surgeon working in the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital Foundation Trust (Oswestry). He has a special interest in early OA and regenerative procedures.

Paul is also an honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Keele, Director of Medical Education at Oswestry. Paul has recently founded and runs the monthly National Complex Cartilage meeting. He is also a current Christan Bezenar Fellow.

Chelcie Jewitt

Dual trainee in Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine

Chelcie is a dual trainee in Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine. She is interested in health inequalities, particularly those faced by women. Throughout her training she has been a victim of, and witness to, multiple incidences of sexism and misogyny. This prompted her to found the Sexism in Medicine project, which has led to the hard-hitting report published with the BMA in August 2021. She campaigns for equality in the workplace, speaking at national and international conferences, collaborating with multiple organisations in order to tackle this issue. This latest campaign, focuses of giving victims of workplace misogyny a voice, bringing about change through the power of their testimony.

Professor Antony Johansen has worked as a full-time orthogeriatrician in the trauma wards of the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for the last 30 years. He co-authored the 2007 British Orthopaedic Association’s ‘Blue Book’ of Fragility Fracture and the 2011 NICE Hip Fracture Guideline (CG124), and since 2013 has been Orthogeriatrician lead for the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) at the Royal College of Physicians.

Michael Johnson

Michael Johnson gained his fellowship of the Australasian College of Surgeons in 1986.

Between 1986-1989, he obtained further training in spinal surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, UK. In addition, he completed further fellowships in Germany and the United States. 
After returning to Melbourne in 1989, he limited his practice to spinal surgery working both in private practice. At different times, he has had public appointments at St Vincent’s Hospital, Monash Medical Centre, Peter MacCallum Clinic and The Royal Children’s Hospital. Most recently he has been working at Epworth Hospital.
 
In addition, he is involved in a number of professional organizations. At present, he is a member of the Federal Board of the AOA and is the AOA President. Also, he has been on a number of government committees relating to the MBS review, Atlas of Healthcare variation and prosthesis reform.

He was on the Executive of the Spine Society of Australia and was SSA President between 2018 and 2020.

Also, he is the Principal Investigator and Steering Committee Chair of the Australian Spine Registry.

Sarah Johnson-Lynn

Sarah Johnson-Lynn is a Senior Lecturer with Hull York Medical School and Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at the James Cook University Hospital, with interests in diabetic foot surgery, foot and ankle trauma and limb reconstruction. She graduated from Newcastle University and completed specialty orthopaedic training in the North East. Fellowships in foot and ankle surgery at Addenbrookes Hospital and in trauma and limb reconstruction at Leeds General Infirmary followed, as well as a British Orthopaedic Research Society travelling fellowship in Asia and Australia. She completed a PhD at Newcastle University, continues to lead clinical and qualitative research projects and teaches on the faculty of several national courses.

Rajesh Kakwani is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon practicing in the North East of England. He studied Undergraduate Medicine (MBBS) and completed a Masters Degree in Orthopaedics at Mumbai University, India.

He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
