Pramod Achan

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Barts Health NHS Trust

Mr Achan is a former clinical director at Barts Health NHS Trust, current programme director of the Percivall Pott Orthopaedic Training programme, and convenor for several training courses at Barts & The Royal London and Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. His practice focuses on lower limb joint preservation surgery, arthroscopic intervention, primary, complex primary and revision joint surgery. In 2009, Mr Achan was one of two upcoming ‘Best of British’ surgeons chosen to represent the British Hip Society Travelling Fellowship to the USA.

Nickil completed his Orthopaedic training in the Northern deanery with further post CCT fellowships from the NHS Golden Jubilee and South Tees hospital NHS Foundation Trust. His interests are in robotics, revision hip and knee arthroplasty. In addition he worked as the lead trainee as part of the WHiTE 8 trial management team delivering a large multi centre clinical randomised trial.

Dr Amit Agrawal completed his Anaesthetic and Critical care training from Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai in India. He is currently a trainee in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthetics at Cambridge University Hospitals. Imran Ahmed

Orthopaedic Registrar, Warwick Orthopaedic Rotation

Imran Ahmed, Orthopaedic Registrar on the Warwick Orthopaedic Rotation, previous NIHR doctoral research fellow at the Warwick Clinical Trials Unit and RCS Hunterian Professor for 2024.

Having completed Undergraduate training at Imperial College London, Imran completed an Academic Foundation post at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire before securing a highly competitive Academic Clinical Fellowship supervised by Andrew Metcalfe. During this post he completed a range of research projects working closely with the Warwick Clinical Trials Unit obtaining several publications and international presentations. Following this post he was successful in obtaining a NIHR doctoral research fellowship grant to complete his PhD at the University of Warwick.

His award winning PhD thesis was titled ‘The treatment, expectations and outcomes of patients aged 18 to 55 with a meniscal tear of the knee.’ This work was supervised by Prof Andy Metcalfe, Andrew Price, Charles Hutchinson, Sophie Staniszewska and Nick Parsons. As part of this work, Imran set up and completed a multicentre national cohort study (the Meniscal tear outcome study (METRO). Several of his chapters have been published and he has gone on to present the findings at national conferences winning a presentation award at BASK 2023. His Hunterian lecture will focus on key findings from his thesis and the implications of this work for clinical practice.

Kash Akhtar

I studied medicine at Imperial College, graduating with a Distinction in Surgery. I was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2005 and the Fellowship (FRCS) in 2011.

I have undertaken a Masters in Medical Education (for which I was awarded a Distinction) and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree. I have given over 100 international presentations, and have received multiple prizes and awards.

I completed my subspecialty fellowship in all aspects of knee surgery (sports injuries, trauma and joint replacement) at the renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.

I was also awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Fellowship and spent 6 months in international centres of orthopaedic excellence across the USA.

I am appointed as a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knees at Barts Health NHS Trust, one of the busiest hospitals in the country, which receives complex tertiary referrals from a broad area.

I am also appointed as a Reader in Orthopaedic Surgery & Surgical Education at Barts and the London School of Medicine & Dentistry. I am an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

I am the Training Programme Director for the prestigious Royal London Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery rotation and a member of the Executive Committees of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the Specialist Advisory Committee to the Joint Committee on Surgical Training.

Fazal Ali

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital

Mr Fazal Ali has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee both in adults and in children. He works at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he is helping to set up a national referral service for these problems in children. He trained in Sheffield with a Knee Fellowship in Newcastle and a short Trauma Fellowship in New York. He is a former Training Programme Director for South Yorkshire and is presently the Vice-President of BOSTAA ( Britsh Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association) . He is Head of the Question Writing committee of the Intercollegiate Board.

He has published his work, written chapters and given invited lectures on training issues and knee surgery both nationally and internationally. He has co-edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ which is a best-selling orthopaedic text and is recently published in Chinese. He is the founder in 2007 of the largest clinical examination course worldwide: The Chesterfield and Sheffield FRCS Clinical course.

Fazal was voted ‘South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Trainer of the Year’ on five occasions. He was given a life-time award for training by the South Yorkshire training scheme in 2012. He was twice shortlisted by BOTA as one of the top trainers in the UK. In 2018 he was again voted Trainer of the Year, this time by East Midlands. In 2017 he was honoured by the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training Rotation by the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.

He serves as a senior examiner for the Intercollegiate Board in the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examinations. In 2017 he was elected to the panel of international examiners (FRCS International). Mr Ali also serves on the board of examiners in other countries with the view that this would help advance the standard of orthopaedic training worldwide.

Silvia Allikmets

Plastics-themed Core Surgical Trainee, South Wales

Silvia Allikmets completed a degree in Neuroscience before graduating medical school from King’s College London in 2020. She completed Foundation Training in South Thames and is currently a Plastics-themed Core Surgical Trainee in South Wales. With a keen interest in teaching, Silvia completed a PGCert in Medical Education for Surgeons and received an award in Teaching Excellence from the South Thames Foundation School in recognition of creating and implementing a medical student teaching programme. She won the BOA Medical Student Essay Prize in 2020 and served on the BOA Education and Careers committee for one year. As a founding member of the British Orthopaedic Medical Students Association (BOMSA), she took on the role of Mentorship & Diversity Lead in 2021-2022, championing for diversity, inclusivity, and equality within the undergraduate experience of T&O. Sanjeev Anand

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr Sanjeev Anand works in the specialist knee unit at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He has a tertiary-level practice in Soft tissue knee and knee reconstructive surgery including paediatric knees.

He is a founder member and Academic chair for the International Society for Knowledge for Surgeons on Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty (ISKSAA) and is the Executive Editor for Journal of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery. Mr. Anand has led in developing national guidelines for ACL reconstructions. He has also contributed to the development of national guidelines for arthroscopic knee surgery and patellofemoral problems.

Dr Arash Angadji joined Orthopaedic Research UK in 2008 and was appointed Chief Executive in 2016. Over the years he has been instrumental in the strategic development and rebranding of the organisation, with a focus on improving governance and expanding the research and education programmes within the charity. Arash has a PhD in Medical Engineering, MBA in Management and is a trustee at the British Orthopaedic Research Society (BORS).

Toni Ardolino

Toni Ardolino studied at Nottingham University then trained in T&O in the Wessex region. She spent a year working in the department of health as Clinical Advisor to the Chief Medical Officer. She carried out her Trauma Fellowship in Oxford and an AO Trauma Fellowship in Philadelphia. She has been a consultant in Hampshire Hospitals NHS Trust since 2018 with a dedicated trauma practice. Within Hampshire Hospitals she is the clinical lead for trauma at department and trust level. Toni currently is part of the OTS committee for media and communications. She is a member the selection design committee for T&O ST3 National Selection. She also has a role as subspecialty editor for Surgery Journal.

Nick Aresti

Nick is a Consultant at Barts Health working across the Royal London and Whipps Cross Hospitals, where he specialises in shoulder and elbow surgery. He is the Deputy Clinical Network Lead for Orthopaedics at Barts Health and is also a Clinical Lead. He has been on the Orthopaedic Committee for two years and was recently appointed to the Vice Chair position. Catherine Armstrong

Catherine's initial qualification was a BSC Hons in Physiotherapy from University of Ulster. Following junior jobs in most specialty areas in physiotherapy, Catherine returned to University of Manchester as a Research Fellow, funded by the Humphrey Booth Trust, to complete her PhD in Electrical Muscle Strengthening. Catherine has worked as a Research Physiotherapist at LUHFT since 2002. She has specialised in Lower Limb Orthopaedics for the last 21 years. Catherine has a special interest in Arthroplasty and in particular Metal on Metal Total Hip Replacements and long-term surveillance of hip replacements. She became involved in the Arthroplasty Care Practitioners Association (ACPA) at its inaugural meeting in 2005. In 2015 she was elected onto the committee of ACPA which resulted in a number of committee roles such as Education Secretary, Vice President and finally President 2020-2022. In undertaking this role, Catherine has become involved with The BOA and the Implant Retrieval Service providing advice on behalf of the ACPA members. She was also involved in writing part of the BOA guidelines on Total Knee Replacements. As ACPA president she organised two parallel conferences alongside the BHS and BASK. As part of the lengthy process of becoming an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner, she had to prove competency in many areas of Arthroplasty care, including image interpretation. Catherine now runs a biennial image interpretation course for Health Care Professionals in Arthroplasty Care.

Homa Arshad

Consultant Arthroplasty, Pelvic and Acetabular Surgeon, Barts Health NHS Trust

My professional practice is in pelvic and acetabular trauma surgery and primary, complex and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. I have an interest in unusual or challenging hip and knee replacement surgery and arthroplasty as an immediate solution for traumatic injuries and fractures.

I graduated from Cambridge University and trained on the prestigious Percivall Pott Rotation.
Completed revision hip fellowship in Norfolk, working with John Nolan, and fellowships in Germany with Professor Michael Raschke, Head of AO, and in Denmark with Professor Kjeld Sobelle who pioneered minimally invasive periacetabular osteotomy.

Current ATLS instructor, teaching also on the national instructor’s faculty course and an active recruiter of new faculty. Also teaches as faculty for AO, the Orthopaedic Trauma Society and the London Pelvic Course.

Rob was appointed at Leicester as a Consultant Orthopaedic & Musculoskeletal Tumour Surgeon in 2008, working jointly at Nottingham University Hospitals, following fellowships in Sydney and at the RNOH. He is the lead clinician of the East Midlands Sarcoma Service. He clinical practice is orthopaedic oncology and lower limb arthroplasty.

His research interests are metastatic bone disease, palliative orthopaedic surgery, genetics of soft tissue sarcoma and outcome measures in sarcoma. He was co-chair of the BOOS working party on surgical management of metastatic bone disease.

Paul Banaszkiewicz

Paul graduated from Glasgow University, completing his basic SHO surgical training in the Merseyside Deanery and then undertook specialist registrar training on the North East of Scotland training programme.  He was appointed as Hip and Knee arthroplasty surgeon at Queen Elizabeth hospital Gateshead in 2004.

He is passionate about training and medical education being a fellow of Higher Education Academy, fellow Academy of Medical Educators and has a Master’s degree in Medical Education.

He is an RCSEng member for the appointments accreditation committee (AAC) and RCSEng quality assurance and accreditation assessor for courses seeking RCSEng course accreditation. 

Paul is visiting professor at Northumbria University this role acts as an interface between the academic roles Northumbria University provides and his own clinical oriented background that provides a practical focus for research.

He has been a strong supporter of the BOA Futures Leadership Programme and the BOA annual Travelling Fellowships.  He is a keen supporter of BOTA being regularly involved with their annual instructional course and sponsor of BOTA travelling fellowships. 

Paul is the main editor and author for three FRCS (Tr&Orth) related exam books that are international best sellers and have won several BMA book awards.  He co-ordinates an annual six-day intensive FRCS (Tr&Orth) revision course at Newcastle. In recent years Paul has run its international equivalent for overseas trainees with courses taking place in Dubai, India, Singapore and Jordan. 

For many years Paul was involved in humanitarian work in Northern Iraq regularly visiting the region to undertake neglected hip and knee arthroplasty surgery.  This gave him a greater appreciation and understanding of our own health care system.  Many patients would have continued to struggle due to a lack of local expertise and resources to pay for expensive surgery.

Through the contacts he has made overseas Paul is keen to develop the international profile of the BOA.

Joanne Banks

Jo is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon with specialist interests in sports knee surgery and complex lower limb trauma. She trained at Liverpool University Medical School and completed her surgical training in the Mersey region. She has also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from the University of Cardiff. She works at the Liverpool University Hospitals, a large city centre teaching hospital, MTC and tertiary referral centre.

She is passionate about education and is an Honorary Lecturer with the University of Liverpool. She is a regular faculty member on national and international courses and is the Training Programme Director and Education Director for the Mersey Orthopaedic and Trauma Training Programme. Outside of work Jo loves most sports, enjoys being out in the fells and is an avid Newcastle United fan. She is the Chief Medical Officer for British Judo, travelling with the squad to competitions all over the World. William Barrett

Dr. William Barrett is a board certified, fellowship trained, Orthopedic Surgeon who specializes in primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery. Tim Beacon

Chief Executive, Medical Aid International

Tim travelled widely as a young man and taught outdoor pursuits overseas; following many adventures, in his early twenties he trained as an Operating Department Practitioner and subsequently became an Assistant Training Co-ordinator for the NW Thames Health Authority. During that time, Tim set up an outdoors adventure training company, running personal development courses, predominantly for healthcare staff, these received approval from Royal Colleges and were included as modules on degree courses, with one filmed as part of an ITV series on the John Radcliffe hospital, Oxford.

Tim has spent 13 years in the Orthopaedic Medical Devices industry, focusing on Trauma, spinal surgery and joint replacement. Tim is also an ambassador of the Primary Trauma Care Foundation, having directed numerous programmes, and supported multiple research initiatives. Two of the latest papers he co-authored were on Laparoscopic Surgery, and affordable inhaled medicines for the LMIC environment.

Tim has led a varied life; he has been both a University healthcare lecturer and civilian lecturer on the UK Special Forces Patrol Medical Course – he is the only civilian to have ever completed this course. This came in particularly useful when running Primary Trauma Foundation courses in Africa. Tim has completed a post-graduate diploma in Travel Health at Glasgow Medical School (see his thesis on ‘What Makes a Good Expedition Medic’ here) and has written a book called “The Gap Year Handbook: An Essential Guide to Adventure Travel”. David Beard

Professor of Musculoskeletal and Surgical Sciences, NDORMS, University of Oxford

David Beard is Professor of Musculoskeletal and Surgical Sciences at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS) in the University of Oxford, an NIHR Senior Investigator and the Rosetrees/RCS Director of the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) Surgical Intervention Trials Unit (SITU NDORMS-Oxford). He is also Professor and Surgical & Complex Intervention Trials Program Lead at the NHMRC CTC, University of Sydney. His role involves various aspects of evaluating (pan-specialty) surgery but with a special interest in orthopaedics and plastics, but also other (MSK) complex interventions (such as physiotherapy).

Vijay Bhalaik

Mr Bhalaik is a Consultant Hand and Upper Limb Surgeon on Merseyside. He runs a busy hand and upper limb service in his hospital, treating all aspects of traumatic and complex upper limb injuries.   He has a wide range of research interests, which include regional anaesthesia, fracture fixation and the assessment of acutely injured hand and upper limb injuries.

Mr Bhalaik is a keen teacher and educator. Maneesh Bhatia is a senior Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at the University Hospitals of Leicester.  He enjoys teaching and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester. He is the founder and director of  British European Foot Ankle Academy (BEOFAA) that aims at educating young orthopaedic surgeons globally. He is passionate about foot and ankle research and education and plays a very active role as a committee member of the Scientific Committee of the European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) and the Education Committee of the British Foot Ankle Society (BOFAS). He has written three books in the fields of foot and ankle surgery, joint injections and primary care Orthopaedic education that have been translated into international languages. One of these books won the prestigious BMA best book award in 2021.

Rahul Bhattacharyya

Rahul Bhattacharyya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee and trauma surgeon at NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor), Imperial College London. He is an executive member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).

He graduated with Honours in medicine and surgery from the University of Sheffield and then trained in orthopaedics in Glasgow before completing a sports knee fellowship at University Hospitals Coventry and a knee and trauma fellowship at Kings College Hospital, London.

His clinical interests are focussed entirely around surgery of the knee with a special interest in sports knee injuries. He has an interest in Meniscal Allograft Transplantation and is one of the few surgeons in Scotland involved in setting up this service.

His research interests are centred around Meniscal Allograft Transplantation, clinical outcomes following ACL reconstruction surgery, biomechanics of sports knee surgery techniques and simulation training in knee surgery. He pioneered the use of Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) in orthopaedic training for which he was awarded an MD by Imperial College London. He continues to work in this area in his current role as Senior Lecturer at Imperial College collaborating nationally and internationally.

Mahmood Bhutta

Mahmood is the inaugural Chair in ENT Surgery and Professor of Sustainable Healthcare at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, and Honorary Consultant and Clinical Green Lead for University Hospitals Sussex.  He has a longstanding interest in environmental and labour rights harms caused by medical supply chains.

Leela Biant

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Manchester University Hospitals

Leela Biant is Academic Head of Dept Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Manchester and Honorary Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Manchester University Hospitals. She is lead Clinician for Cartilage Repair and Regeneration and the incoming President of BASK.

Leela trained in London and completed specialist fellowships in Sydney and London. She was Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in Edinburgh for 8 years before moving to Manchester. Her thesis was entitled ‘Articular Cartilage Injury and Repair in the Young Adult Knee’ and her research focus includes biological regenerative surgery and advanced joint replacement. She has won multiple awards for research, and now leads a strong research team that includes academic clinicians, biomedical engineers, materials scientists and cell biologists.

Leela is an elected ICRS Senior Fellow, and founded the ICRS Global patient registry. She is a Lifetime Honorary Fellow of the UK Biological Knee Society in recognition of her work in this field. She has won awards for teaching, and is a clinician advisor to NICE. She was an ABC Travelling Fellow in 2010 and BASK Travelling Fellow in 2014.

Her lecture "Regenerating Damaged Joints; from bench to bedside to theatre and round again" will be a celebration of progress, an acknowledgement of the joy and vexations of orthopaedic research and an appreciation of what we don't yet know for sure.

Martin Bircher

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Martin qualified in 1977 and went through the “old style” training progmme - moving around London and then to Glasgow. His registrar training was on the Nottingham circuit, then as a senior trainee in South West Thames –as it was known then. He did a year’s fellowship in Toronto with Marvin Tile, which cemented his interest in major trauma and in particular pelvic injury. After nearly 4 years as a consultant in Epsom he moved to St. Georges.

There he is established a pelvic injury unit and helped other units establish across the country.

Benjamin Bloch

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Nottingham University Hospitals

Mr Benjamin Bloch is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in hip and knee surgery.

He studied medicine at Imperial College School of Medicine in London and qualified in 2003, going on to complete his orthopaedic training in the East Midlands Deanery in Leicester and Northamptonshire.  He then completed a further 18 months subspecialist training in hip and knee surgery in Nottingham and Coventry.

Benjamin Bloch has been working as an NHS and private Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Nottingham since 2016.  He performs a large number of hip and knee replacements – over 250 per year.  He has an interest in revision hip and knee replacements and the treatment of the young patient with an arthritic knee.  He can offer treatments suitable for the younger patient including cartilage regeneration techniques, knee osteotomy, unicompartmental knee replacement and patell-femoral joint replacements where clinically appropriate.

He is actively involved in research into hip and knee surgery.  He has published in respected orthopaedic journals and presented work at international meetings.  He also peer-reviews articles for the Bone and Joint Journal.

Benjamin Bloch is one of the Consultants responsible for running the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network meeting and maintains a keen interest in monitoring the outcomes of surgery. This experience ensures that he stays up to date and practices evidence-based medicine – particularly important when choosing implants and when offering new treatments.

Mark Blyth

Mr Blyth was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 2001. His elective practice is weighted heavily toward all forms of knee surgery including arthroscopy, soft tissue ligament reconstruction, arthroplasty and revision arthroplasty. In addition to this he deals with a number of late reconstruction problems following trauma.

He has an interest in partial knee replacement surgery and has run clinical trials on the use of robotics in knee surgery.

He is the Director of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary Orthopaedic Research Unit with a research portfolio of knee and trauma studies. He is also the current Chair of the Scottish Orthopaedic Services Delivery Group which promotes service redesign in Orthopaedics and including same day discharge following lower limb arthroplasty.

Sandra Bonczek

Miss Sandra Janina Bonczek is currently working as a post CCT spinal fellow in Newcastle. Graduating from the Medical University of Silesia in 2006, she went on to complete all her postgraduate foundation, CST and higher surgical training in Yorkshire and obtained her CCT in 2022.

Alongside her clinical work, Sandra is actively involved in medical education. She is an ATLS and BBS instructor. Her commitment to teaching is further evidenced by her completion of a medical education degree in 2014, her main interest in education is implementation of instructional and practical teaching methodologies.

In the field of spinal surgery, she carries a particular interest in cervical spine conditions, adult deformity, and infection. Sandra is a member of British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and British Association of Spine Surgeons (BASS). 

Outside of her work, Sandra enjoys traveling, motorsports, horse riding, reading about history and politics as well as watching movies.

Lizzie Bond

Lizzie is a New Zealand trained orthopaedic surgeon currently completing an upper limb fellowship at Addenbrookes Hospital. Prior to this she completed a year long fellowship at Duke University in Sports Orthopaedic Surgery. She has thoroughly enjoyed travelling the world with her young family and experiencing the different ways we all practice medicine. In 2024, she will head home to Dunedin New Zealand for a consultant post.

Steve Borland

Steve Borland is a Consultant at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne. He specialises predominantly in orthopaedic trauma, pelvic and acetabular fractures and limb reconstruction. Deepa Bose

Deepa Bose is a consultant in orthopaedic trauma and limb reconstruction at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.  Her practice is exclusively in adults, and includes general trauma, major trauma and post-traumatic limb reconstruction: osteomyelitis, malunion, non-union, limb lengthening & deformity correction.

She is currently Vice Chair of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Trauma & Orthopaedics, and the lead for CESR approval process.  She has also contributed to the revision of the curriculum.  She holds an MSc in Medical Education and has been admitted to the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of RCS Edinburgh, as well as being a member of the Academy of Medical Educators.  She is involved in national selections for core and orthopaedic surgery, and sits on ARCP panels for both.  She was regional training programme director for core surgery in West Midlands from 2015 – 2019.

She is the Chairman of World Orthopaedic Concern UK, a specialist society of the British Orthopaedic Association, and a charity which focuses on teaching orthopaedics in low resource countries.  She is co-director of the postgraduate orthopaedic training programme in Guyana.  She also visits Gaza as part of the UK limb reconstruction team of the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians.

She has been on the Emergency Response Team of UK Med, a first response team for international disaster relief, since 2012.

Helena Bourdillon

Around 2000/01, I was on the verge of suicide. Today I lead a life that I could never have imagined possible while I was battling depression.

My mission is to spread my story and message that life is worth fighting for, that it is never too late and anything is possible, for anyone.

I am Helena Bourdillon. I have survived and triumphed over chronic depression and now I freedive to depths of -76m.  I have 7 National Records for depth and have represented GB at the World Championships four times.

But I want to go deeper, much deeper, because the deeper I dive, the further my message will carry.

Born in 1974, my motto is “Daring to Inspire.” When I’m not in the water, I do public speaking events where I talk of my journey to positive mental health, incorporating the knowledge and skills that I have learned during my recovery process as well as those gained from freediving and how these can be easily translated into healthier lifestyles and businesses (without the need to hold your breath!)

As a certified Buteyko Clinic and Oxygen Advantage Advanced Instructor, with additional education gained from many other breath work disciplines, I use my knowledge to help anyone who sees the value in working to improve their health and general performance: from Long Haul Covid sufferers, to CEOs and performance athletes, people who struggle with anxiety and panic attacks to those just wanting to feel and do better by returning to and building upon the fundamentals of good breathing practice thus improving mental and physical baseline health as well as focus, performance and endurance.

My message is one of survival, resilience and hope.

Tim is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and was appointed National Director for Clinical Improvement and Elective Recovery for NHS England in November 2022. He is Chair of the GIRFT programme and leads the roll out of GIRFT methodology across all surgical and medical specialties.

Tim was appointed to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital as a consultant in 1992. His specialist interests are in orthopaedic oncology as well as surgery to the hip and knee. He was medical director at the RNOH for 15 years, ensuring a re-build, and was president of the British Orthopaedic Association in 2014.

He is also chair and national lead of the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA) and Honorary Colonel of 202 (Midlands) Field Hospital RAMC.

He was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List for services to the surgical profession.

Miss Kate Brown graduated from Oxford Medical School in 2002. She trained in orthopaedic surgery in the North East Thames region before obtaining her FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics) in 2014.

She completed her post CCT Hand Fellowship in Derby and was successful in the British Diploma of Hand Surgery in 2017, prior to being appointed as a Hand Consultant in April 2018. She has a sub-specialist interest in Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Injuries and spent a year at the PNI unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore whilst in training. Donald Campbell

Chair of Training Programme Director’s Forum, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Ninewells Hospital and Medical School

Donald Campbell was born in Vancouver Island, Canada and emigrated to Scotland where he spent his formative years. He graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School in 1993 and trained around most of Scotland, including his Trauma and Orthopaedics (T&O) rotation in the East of Scotland. He completed two years of fellowships in paediatric T&O in Glasgow and Sheffield. He was appointed as a consultant in Ninewells Teaching Hospital in Dundee in 2007, where he treats a broad range of paediatric conditions with a particular interest in the foot and the ankle, including some adult F&A work. He has a keen interest in training and was the East of Scotland T&O Training Programme Director for 6 years. He is now the TPD forum chair for the UK and Ireland and a FRCS T&O examiner. He is also a SAC liaison member for the JCST and sits on the BOA education committee.

Marion Campbell

Marion Campbell is Professor of Health Services Research at the University of Aberdeen and co-Director of the RCSEng Aberdeen Surgical Trials Centre. Marion is a medical statistician by training, a clinical trialist and methodologist. Her main research interests are in the design and conduct of surgical and device trials.  She has published widely on clinical trials methodology including on cluster randomised trials, design of trials of surgical interventions, pragmatic trials and trials reporting.  She has served on many national and international funding agencies and committees and is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Faculty of Public Health, the International Society for Clinical Trials and the Royal Society of Edinburgh and is a previous NIHR senior investigator.

Tricia Campbell

Tricia has held a number of national leadership positions, most notably she was elected as President of British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA) in November 2019. She completed a leadership fellowship at Health Education England where her work was focused on trainee wellbeing. She had the privilege of sitting on the review panel for the Kennedy report into diversity in surgical leadership

Tricia has been involved in motorsport medicine for the last ten years, working at racetracks across the country. A career highlight is being part of the medical team for Formula1 at Silverstone each year.

Jim Carmichael

Jim Carmichael is a fellowship trained consultant orthopaedic Surgeon at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust (NWAFT) specialising in the care of foot and ankle conditions.

He graduated from Nottingham University Medical School in 1997 and completed the Basic Surgical Rotation in the Nottingham region. He relocated to Wessex in 2002 for his Higher surgical training completing a masters in orthopaedic engineering before undertaking fellowships in Sydney and London. Andrew Carr

Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Oxford

Andrew Carr is the Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford and trained at Bristol, Sheffield, Oxford, Seattle and Melbourne. He established the shoulder surgery service in Oxford and is past President of the British Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Society (BESS).

His research has focussed on the development and evaluation of surgical implants. Whilst working with John Goodfellow, he defined the use of the Oxford Knee as a partial knee replacement which has been implanted in over two million people worldwide. With grant support from NIHR, UKRI and the Wellcome Trust his lab has focussed on the role of inflammation in soft tissue healing and the invention of novel nanoscale material implants to improve healing after surgery. He pioneered the importance of patients’ views in assessing the outcome of surgery and the Oxford Scores, which he co-invented are now used globally to assess patient outcomes and direct health policy.  He has improved the infrastructure for clinical trials for orthopaedic surgery in the UK. His work includes the controversial use of placebo controls in surgical trials. He co-founded a Royal College of Surgeons of England Trial Unit in Oxford in 2012. He is author of over 450 publications, including more than 30 in the Lancet, the BMJ, Cell and Nature Biotech, which have been cited over 41,000 times.

Using funds raised from charitable gifts of over £30 million he has led the development of the Botnar Research Institute which now houses over 300 multidisciplinary researchers focussing on clinical trials and bioengineering. He was Director of the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit in Oxford from 2008-2017 and was instrumental in the relocation of the Kennedy Institute for Rheumatology to Oxford in 2013 with an investment of over £60 million from the Kennedy Trust. 

He was a Non-Executive Director (2001-2011) and then Divisional Director of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre during the formation of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust (2011-2014). He was a trustee and Deputy Chair of the medical Charity Versus Arthritis from 2002-2011. He is a Nuffield Medical Trustee responsible the Nuffield Benefaction to Oxford University for the Advancement of Medicine. He is Chair of the Nuffield Oxford Hospitals Fund. Anna Chapman

Anna Chapman is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals, Coventry and Warwickshire, with a specialist interest in Foot and Ankle surgery.

She qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’s Hospitals School of Medicine in London and completed her Orthopaedic training on the Warwick rotation. She undertook Fellowship training in Bournemouth and Bristol, and was appointed as a Consultant in 2012.

Helen Chase

Helen studied medicine at UCL, obtaining an intercalated BSc in Physiology and Pharmacology. She was part of the East Anglian region for her speciality orthopaedic training, gaining her FRCS in 2015.

Salma is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Cambridge University Hospital Trust who specialises in Shoulder and Elbow trauma, sports injuries and shoulder replacements. She is triple fellowship trained from international recognised centres of shoulder excellence, having trained at Oxford, Cambridge and Reading, and spent a year during training at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She was awarded the BESS Travelling Fellowship. Her Trauma and Orthopaedics higher surgical training was completed in Oxford, and she studied medicine at Cambridge University. 

Salma is committed to producing the highest quality research to offer patients the best evidence-based, compassionate care. She was awarded a PhD in Orthopaedic Surgery from Oxford University, for her studies of rotator cuff failure and repair strategies to improve healing. To date she has been awarded £450,000 in research grants, including an ORUK early career research fellowship, and has published widely. She is the associate editor for Bone and Joint Journal 360, and was previously the social media editor for Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. She currently sits on the British Elbow and Shoulder Surgery Research Committee and was previously Executive Committee member for British Orthopaedic Research Society. 

Teaching has always been important to Salma and she was the co-director of orthopaedic teaching for Oxford University undergraduate medical students for 4 years. She has taught widely on courses such as the Oxford University Orthopaedic MSC course, shoulder and elbow cadaveric courses in Cambridge and ORUK FRCS Revision courses. She has regularly lectured internationally and nationally, including teaching in China and Palestine.

She has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to improving training for all doctors as well as patient outcomes, reflected in her wide-ranging work on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives. Some of her key previous roles include:

Chantal Chenu

Professor of Skeletal Biology, Royal Veterinary College

Chantal Chenu is a Professor of Skeletal Biology at the Royal Veterinary College in London. After graduating from the University of Lyon with a degree in Biochemistry, she moved to San Antonio, Texas, USA and worked on osteoclast differentiation from bone marrow under the supervision of Professor David Roodman. She obtained her PhD from the University of Lyon and then joined Pierre Delmas’s INSERM group in Lyon where she worked on bone matrix proteins. She became an independent INSERM researcher in 1991 and started her own research group investigating the role of the nervous system in the control of bone development and turnover. She moved to the UK in 2002, first as a Senior Lecturer, then Reader and Professor. Her research interests are the regulatory and repair mechanisms of bone. More recently, she became interested in bone pain in osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and after factures. She was a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research and the Journal of Endocrinology and Molecular Endocrinology, and served on several research society boards, including the International Society for Fracture Repair.  She is also part of the ‘BonePain’ training network, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. She has received continuous support for her research from funding bodies including ARUK, ORUK, the Welcome Trust and the EU.

Dr. Cheung received MBBS degree from The University of Hong Kong in 2006. He started Orthopaedics specialty training afterward and acquired specialist qualification in 2013. After his training, Dr. Cheung determined to sub-specialize in joint replacement surgery, and has received overseas training in various renowned institutions in USA, France, UK and Korea. Callum Clark is a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon and Clinical Lead for Foot and Ankle surgery at Frimley Health NHS Trust, and also works in private practice at the Windsor Foot and Ankle Clinic and the Fortius clinic. He is chairman of the BOFAS Education Committee and has run a popular post-CCT fellowship since 2007. Anna Clarke

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

She is the clinical lead for the Bristol paediatric Major Trauma Centre, one of only 5 stand alone paediatric centres in the UK, and the second busiest trauma centre in UK

After fellowships in Australia and Southampton she took up a consultant post at Bristol Royal Children`s hospital, UK.

Her special interests include all aspects of trauma but particularly upper limb. She has developed a niche practice in managing complex elbow injuries in children which has taught her much about the difficulties in managing the rarer injuries and their consequences.

She takes great care and interest in the bespoke technical aspects of the management of traumatic injuries and fractures in children.
Her elective practice is wide ranging but with a focus on cerebral palsy and upper limb conditions.

Her specialist interests include the orthopaedic management of neuromuscular conditions including cerebral palsy. She set up the specialist multidisciplinary clinic at BCH for the assessment and ongoing management of musculoskeletal issues encountered in children who have undergone selective dorsal rhizotomy, and sits on the SDR MDT panel. She has experience in muscle lengthening and ongoing monitoring and surgery that may be required in this specialist group of patients.

Her sub specialist expertise extends to treatment of conditions of the upper limb in children. She set up and continues to run the complex upper limb orthopaedic clinic, and has shared responsibility for 2 separate regular clinics for rare and complex conditions or consequences of trauma in the upper limb, with 2 of her plastic surgery expert colleagues.

She is a keen educator and co-chair of the AO paediatric trauma course.

She is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons, surgical tutor and educational supervisor.

Her non- clinical roles include training of future orthopaedic surgeons.

She Is a mother of two, food fanatic and keen home chef, she enjoys cooking for friends and family in her free time.

Robert Clayton

Consultant Orthopaedic Foot Ankle Surgeon, NHS Fife

Robert Clayton graduated from Edinburgh University medical school in 2000. He undertook basic and higher surgical training in the South East Scotland region, followed by advanced fellowship training in Glasgow and Toronto in 2009. In 2010 he took up post in NHS Fife as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a major subspecialist interest in foot and ankle surgery. His elective practice is now almost entirely in foot and ankle surgery. He performs general trauma with a heavy exposure to foot and ankle trauma. Mr Clayton was elected to the Scientific Committee of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) in 2014 and has served on the BOFAS council as Director of Media and Communications since 2017. Tim Clough qualified from the University of St Andrews, Scotland and Manchester, completing his orthopaedic training in Canada with an International arthroscopy and sports medicine Fellowship. He is an NHS Consultant at Wrightington Hospital, where his practice consists of ankle arthroplasty and fusions, revisions, complex hindfoot surgery, forefoot reconstruction, sports injuries and arthroscopy. He has, for the last 15 years, provided advice and surgery following referrals from a wide variety of Premiership and Championship football teams, super league rugby teams, premiership rugby union teams and a range of elite and Olympic athletes across a wide variety of National sporting organisations.

Tim Cootes

Professor of Computer Vision, The University of Manchester

After completing a degree in Mathematics and Physics at Exeter, Tim Cootes did a PhD in Civil Engineering, monitoring a storm sewer overflow in Sheffield. During this project, he was introduced to the delights of computer vision, and shortly after completing it, he took up a research position at the University of Manchester. He has remained there ever since. His research has focused on statistical models of shape and appearance, and how they can be used to understand variations across populations and to locate structures in new images. The algorithms that he and colleagues invented have been adopted worldwide and applied to many different application areas, including interpreting images of faces and medical image analysis. Tim was appointed as a lecturer at the University in 2001 and eventually became a Professor of Computer Vision in 2006. He has been involved in a range of activities to translate research into real-world solutions.  His current focus is on applications of the technology in the musculoskeletal domain, particularly looking at diseases such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

Professor Sir Paul Curran

Sir Paul was appointed Chair of the National Joint Registry in May 2022.  President of City, University of London from 2010 to 2021, he served previously as Vice-Chancellor of Bournemouth University and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton.  A former academic at the Universities of Sheffield, Reading and Swansea, a NASA research scientist at Ames California and advisor to the European Space Agency, his research on environmental Earth observation has focused on climate change.

He is Chair of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, a Director of the Universities Superannuation Scheme and President of the Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry Society.  He was Chair of the national Review Body on Doctors’ & Dentists’ Remuneration, Universities & Colleges Employers Association and The Conversation UK and was also a Member of the Natural Environment Research Council, Quality Assurance Agency, London Higher and Universities UK.

Rory Cuthbert

Rpry is an ST8 registrar on the Percivall Pott rotation in London. He has a subspecialty interest in the upper limb and will commence a one-year fellowship at the Sydney Shoulder Research Institute (based at Royal North Shore Hospital) in August 2024.

He completed an intercalated BSc in Medical Law at Bristol University in 2011 before graduating from Imperial Medical School in 2014 with the St Mary’s Association Scholarship and Enid Linder Trust Prize.

Last year Rory graduated with Distinction from Harvard Medical School’s Surgical Leadership Program where my capstone project focussed on strategies to address underrepresentation of orthopaedics in the UK undergraduate medical curriculum.

Anna Datta

Mark Davies

Nev Davies

Nev Davies is a trauma and orthopaedic consultant working in Reading UK with a specialist interest in children’s and adolescent knee injuries. He has a dual practice of children’s orthopaedics, but also an adult knee practice, so manages all knee conditions from cradle to grave. Nev is passionate about Injury Prevention and a trustee of Power Up to Play charity. He is one of the leading members of a UK task force looking to design, set up and implement a national children’s injury prevention program that will tackle this topical issue.  Out of work Nev is scratch golfer and was lucky enough to play in The Open Qualifiers for the last 2 years.

Professor Davis works at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham where he undertakes primary/revision hip and knee arthroplasty and is the clinical lead for the arthroplasty department. He is an expert in the use and development of computer navigation/robotics and is passionate about improving the outcomes of joint replacement surgery. He has extensive research interests including in bearing surfaces, basic science and computer/robotic assisted surgery. Leanne Davison

Leanne Davison is a member of the BMA UK SAS committee, has chaired the BMA Northern Ireland SAS committee since 2020, & has 13 years of SAS committee experience with the BMA.

She is passionate about ensuring all SAS doctors are given every opportunity to develop to their full potential, and is a proponent of the #SASbychoice campaign.

She graduated from Queens University Belfast and has worked in Australia, where she worked as an orthopaedic resident medical officer. On her return to Northern Ireland she completed her Membership of the Royal College in Physicians, while working as a staff grade in the regional ICU, before becoming an Associate Specialist in ICU in 2008.

Leanne now works as an Associate Specialist Northern Ireland’s in Regional ICU in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. She has developed her own areas of specialised interest, including humanising ICU, long-stay ICU patients, tracheostomies, and complex ventilator weans, particularly in patients with high cervical spinal cord injuries. She now chairs the tracheostomy MDT in for the regional ICU in the regional trauma centre.

Sebastian Dawson-Bowling

Sebastian is an orthopaedic consultant at Barts Health NHS Trust. After graduating from Cambridge University, he undertook orthopaedic training in London, culminating in fellowship training at RNOH Stanmore. He also spent time at the HSS in New York. He is predominantly based at the Royal London Hospital, where he specialises in complex revision hip and knee arthroplasty, as well as working within the major trauma service. From 2017-22 he was clinical network director and ICS chair for orthopaedics for the northeast London region, leading on the development of both the regional elective hub and spoke network, and the specialist fragility fracture service at Whipps Cross. He continues to act as BHS revision network lead for the region.

He is actively involved in implant design, and sits on both Editorial and Regional Clinical Coordinator committees of the National Joint Registry. He also holds a Masters degree in Medical Law, and acts regularly as an expert witness in both negligence and personal injury cases.

In addition to his own clinical work he is passionate about training, running a highly sought after revision arthroplasty fellowship, and has previous receiving the Percival Pott regional trainer of the year award. He was cofounder and inaugural honorary president of both LUOS (London Undergraduate Orthopaedic Society) and BOMSA (British Orthopaedic Medical Student Association). Joe Dias

Consultant Hand and Orthopaedic Surgeon, University Hospitals of Leicester

Joe Dias graduated from Bombay University in 1981 obtaining accreditation in the UK 1987. He trained on the Leicester training programme under Paul Gregg where he obtained his MD and was appointed consultant in general orthopaedics specialising in upper limb surgery.

Joe Dias is Professor of Hand and Orthopaedic Surgery and Head of the Academic Team of Musculoskeletal Surgery (AToMS) and is a Consultant Hand and Orthopaedic Surgeon for the University Hospitals of Leicester.

He has published over 160 scientific articles, over 20 other publications and over 30 chapters in books most on hand surgery and epidemiology. He has 24 publications on scaphoid fractures. He has authored multiple national reports and NICE accredited clinical pathways.

Professor Dias has received many substantial grants including from the HTA and NIHR looking at scaphoid fractures (SWIFFT) Dupuytrens (DISC) and RAPSODI. He was co-applicant on the DRAFFT2 study and UK FROST, SOFFT, FIRST.

He has been Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hand Surgery (Europe edition) and on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. 

Professor Dias was President of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) in 2008 and was President of the British Orthopaedic Association in 2012.

He was Head of School of Surgery at the East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery (South) and currently leads an orthopaedic research team (AToMS) at Leicester, with 5 MD/PhD students and 2 BSc students. He has maintained close links with Orthopaedic surgery in India visiting and lecturing regularly.

His subspecialty areas of interest are in lower limb revision arthroplasty and metastatic bone disease. Apart from my general trauma oncall commitments, he also participate in our tertiary Periprosthetic Fracture referral service. Hiren is actively involved in research including clinical trials in joint replacement surgery. His service development interests are currently focussed on improving metastatic bone disease management, digital patient support, day case THR surgery and improving overall length of stay in arthroplasty.

Samantha Downie is an ST8 trainee in orthopaedics in Dundee, Scotland.  She is in the final year of a part-time PhD in metastatic bone disease and has published related work in the BMJ, BJJ and been an invited speaker at the BOA and EFORT annual congresses.  She has been the recipient of the Robertson Trust Research Fellowship and the British Hip Society Travelling Fellowship.

Deborah Eastwood is an Associate Professor of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, UCL. She works at Great Ormond St Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Deborah works in the generality of paediatric orthopaedic surgery but has a particular interest in children with overgrowth syndromes, metabolic bone diseases and those with neurological problems. She is also the surgeon for the GOSH Ponseti service.

Jonathan Evans

Jonathan Evans is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Trauma & Orthopaedics at the University of Exeter and Consultant hip surgeon at the Exeter Hip Unit. Having completed his doctorate at the University of Bristol, he now works on the data analysis team of the National Joint Registry (NJR). His research interests include Post-operative Periprosthetic Femoral Fractures (POPFF) and he is currently developing a Core Outcome Set for POPFF in preparation for trials in this area. He is working towards securing funding for an international collaborative RCT investigating the management of Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI), the ROADMAP trial. He is also working to develop methods to assess the environmental impact of health technologies and embed this within both trials and observational research such as the NJR.

Agostino Faletra

Agostino has built a solid academic and clinical background. His journey began in Italy, where he graduated with top honours in 2007. He further deepened his understanding of the field by completing a Master's degree in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation in 2012.

In Italy, he began his career working with T&O and MSK patients. This experience proved invaluable when he moved to the United Kingdom, where he quickly adapted to working within the NHS and honed his skills in managing acute trauma.

There, he focuses on ensuring T&O patients receive comprehensive care, helping to streamline their journey from assessment to discharge.

Luke Farrow

Mr Luke Farrow is a Clinical Academic and Senior Orthopaedic Trainee based in Aberdeen, Scotland. He is currently taking time out of his clinical training to undertake a CSO Funded Clinical Academic Fellowship exploring how to make improvements in the clinical care pathway for those awaiting hip and knee replacement through the use of artificial intelligence techniques.

He has particular research interests in the use of routinely collected healthcare information, including novel data sources and clinical application of artificial intelligence methods to Trauma and Orthopaedics. He is the current chair of the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit Quality Improvement and Research Sub-Group and a member of the steering committee for the Bone and Joint Infection Registry.

Chris Fetherston qualified from St Bartholomew’s & The Royal London School of Medicine in 2001.  He completed higher surgical training as an orthopaedic registrar in the Wessex region before undertaking fellowship training in shoulder & elbow surgery in Southampton and Oxford.  Chris was appointed as a consultant at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth in 2015 where his practice includes shoulder & elbow surgery and general trauma.

Chris’s military career includes deployments to Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and the Middle East.  For the past 7 years he has been part of 16 Medial Regiment, acting as the Regimental lead for trauma & orthopaedic surgery for 4 years.  16 Medical Regiment provides medical support to high readiness units, including the Air Mobile Medical Group.  It was in this capacity that Chris deployed to Turkey in February 2023, to provide medical support to the Turkish government following the devastating earthquakes in the region.

Miss Claire Fitzgerald is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in conditions relating to the Shoulder and Upper Limb. Her undergraduate studies were in the University of Wales, College of Medicine, graduating in 2003. She went on to complete her early surgical and orthopaedic training in the University Hospital of Wales and the Welsh Orthopaedic Training Rotation, before relocating to London to join the University College Hospital London Orthopaedic Training Rotation. She has completed 20 months of subspecialty shoulder and upper limb fellowship training in University College Hospital London, and Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital London – with training in all aspects of arthroscopic and open shoulder and upper limb surgery.

Miss Fitzgerald has an interest in postgraduate clinical education and was awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Education from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow. She is a faculty member on a number of training courses, including courses for the FRCS Trauma and Orthopaedics. She is a qualified Advanced Trauma and Life Support Instructor and regularly instructs and examines for this internationally recognized qualification. She has an interest in clinical research, and has co published in peer reviewed journals, and also had a key role in the setup of an NIHR clinical randomized controlled trial on fellowship.

Pedro Foguet

Mr Pedro Foguet went to medical school in Barcelona, Spain, and came over to the UK in 1993. Here he did his basic surgical training in the West Midlands and after clearing his exams and becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh joined the Birmingham Specialist Registrar rotation. After registrar training and before his appointment as Consultant to University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust he did a Fellowship in Lower Limb Reconstruction at the prestigious Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.

As a Consultant at UHCW NHS Trust he rapidly became subspecialised and he is what could be described as a high volume hip and knee replacement surgeon performing well over 300 primary and revision hip and knee operations each year. Mr Foguet has a particular interest in the management of prosthetic joint infections and problem metal on metal hip resurfacings and replacements. These constitute his two main areas of research and have lead to a number of publications and presentations both nationally and internationally.

UHCW is the main teaching Hospital linked to Warwick Medical School and Mr Foguet is involved in regular teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students at a number of courses that run throughout the year. Because of his commitment to medical education Mr Foguet was awarded a Honorary Associate Clinical Professorship by Warwick University.

Henry Fu

Dr Henry FU is a full-time joint replacement surgeon now serving as the deputy chief in the Division of Joint Replacement Surgery and Director of Hong Kong West Cluster Joint Replacement Centre.

Dr Fu graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 2008. He received his orthopaedic training in Queen Mary Hospital after his internship, obtaining his Masters of Medical Science degree from the University of Hong Kong in 2012 and Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2015.

Dr Fu is now one of a handful of national experts in computer assisted hip and knee surgery. He received formal training in world renown hospitals including Hospital for Special Surgery (NY, USA), Rothman Institute (PA, USA) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MA, USA) specifically in robotic surgery. Upon returning from training, Dr Fu set up the robotic joint replacement service in Queen Mary Hospital by securing a donation of HK$15 million to acquire the Mako robotic arm surgical system. Having performed over 300 robotic hip and knee replacements, he is currently one of only three certified robotic surgery trainers in Hong Kong and has taught over 100 surgeons both locally and internationally to perform robotic hip replacement surgery. Dr Fu is now the chairman of the East Asia advisory board for robotic hip replacement and receives territory wide referrals for robotic hip and knee replacement for complex deformities.

Dr Fu is now the Director of the Hong Kong West Cluster Joint Replacement Centre at Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital where over 350 joint replacement operations are performed annually. Using enhanced recovery protocol, 90% of patients can be discharged 3 days from surgery. He is honorary associate consultant at Queen Mary Hospital and a trainer of the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Sarah Gill is a Consultant Orthopaedic & Major Trauma surgeon at the QEUH, Glasgow. She has a subspecialty interest in Major Trauma care, pelvic, rib and periarticular lower limb fracture fixation. Andrew Goldberg

Mr Andrew Goldberg is a translational researcher focussed on the ankle and hindfoot. He runs studies across the translational spectrum from basic science, to bench top studies; through to multicentre clinical trials.  

Mr Goldberg graduated from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School (Imperial College) in 1994 before completing his specialist training in trauma and orthopaedics in London with a specialist fellowship in complex foot and ankle disorders in Oxford, as well as overseas in centres of excellence across the USA and Europe. He was awarded an MD from the University of London in 2006.  In 2009 he was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Northampton, and in 2010 he was appointed as an Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in Stanmore and an Associate Professor at UCL where he helped raise more than £10m of research grants into health informatics; first in man studies into stem cell therapies (ASCAT); and NIHR HTA multicentre RCTs comparing ankle replacement against ankle fusion (TARVA); as well as examining and supervising PhD students. In 2018 he moved his clinical role to the Wellington Hospital in London but continues to run his research programme.   In 2011 he was awarded an OBE for services to medicine.  He sits on the outcomes committee for BOFAS, the National Joint Registry (NJR) Editorial Committee and Medical Advisory Committees and he is an International Editor for the AOFAS Foot & Ankle International.

Rob Gregory

Consultant T&O Surgeon, University Hospital of North Durham

A graduate of Newcastle University, Rob's surgical training centred in the Nort East of England and concluded with a Fellowship in Adelaide, Australia. One of the last orthopaedic surgeons appointed to a general orthopaedic consultant post, Rob was able to develop his practice in a way that allowed him to focus on all problems relating to the knee, but in addition he has been able to maintain an interest in general orthopaedic trauma. Whilst Rob has held a number of clinical management roles within his trust, has held an RSPA role, has been a Trustee of the BOA, and is an experienced examiner, his main interest throughout his career has been training and education, this culminating in his recent role as SAC Chair.

Rob is a strong advocate of change being driven with stakeholder consensus using high quality evidence, he has been active in promoting and implementing a policy of Inclusion and Diversity within the specialty, and has promoted an environment of transparency within training.

Chinmay Gupte

Mr Chinmay Gupte is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Reader (Associate Professor) in knee and trauma surgery at Imperial College, London, which encompasses St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals.  Chinmay is a member of the BASK executive committee and BASK lead in research, as well as NIHR clinical research network NW London lead. He is also clinical director of the 30 yr established Wellington knee unit and CEO of Sportshealing ltd.

His main clinical interests are in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscus root repairs, multiligment injuries, adolescent knee injuries, patellofemoral instability, osteochondral injuries and robotic knee unicompartmental and total knee replacement.

As director of training for trauma and orthopaedics for London deanery NW Thames (2011-2018) Mr Gupte helped reshape training for the consultants of the future in this region. He is also past President of the Royal Society of Medicine Orthopaedics Section. He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2004 for his work on the meniscofemoral knee ligaments and their role in knee arthritis and ligament injury. He won the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal Proxime Accessit in 2005. He has published over 100 papers in his research interests which include lateral tenodesis in ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair, MPFL reconstruction, joint fluid analysis, chondral replacement and  simulation training of knee surgeons.

His time as captain of Oxford University and professional cricketer in 1995/6 has given Chinmay added insight into the unique needs of sportsmen in returning to sport after injury; experience that he brings to bear in his clinical practice.

Enis Guryel

Enis is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon working at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust in the Major Trauma Centre since 2011.

Bob Handley has been a Consultant on the Trauma Service at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford since 1994. Bob is currently President of the British Orthoapedic Association, and National Clinical Lead for GIRFT Orthopaedic Trauma. He has been President of both AOUK and the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, and has chaired the NICE guideline development group. Bob was also an examiner for FRCS T&O for ten years.

James Harcus

Lecturer in Diagnostic Imaging, University of Leeds

James qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer from University of Leeds in 2002.  He began his postgraduate education and specialism in radiographic reporting and image interpretation in 2004 and completed his MSc in 2011, followed by a PgCert in musculoskeletal ultrasound in 2012.  His clinical roles in both primary and secondary care included the reporting of radiographic examinations of the MSK system, chest and abdomen as well as performing MSK ultrasound up until 2020. 

Since moving into higher education in 2012 his main role has been in leading image interpretation education for a range of health professionals, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including radiographers, physician associates, advanced nurse practitioners, and doctors.  Between 2017 and 2019 he was seconded as a clinical educator to develop and manage the UK’s first clinical academy for radiographer reporting.

James’ main research and scholarly interests are in the development of image interpretation skills and methods of education, with a particular focus on the systematic approach to image interpretation and communicating findings.  He has presented his work at both international and international conferences and has authored two books on anatomy and radiographic image interpretation of the skeletal system, the most recent being published this year and entitled Image Interpretation; bones joints and fractures.

Paul Haslam

Mr Haslam trained in Sheffield and completed fellowships in Melbourne, Auckland and Sydney, including with Mr Leo Pinczewski.

Philip Henman has been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Newcastle upon Tyne since 2001.  He graduated from St Andrews and Manchester Universities and roamed around the country during his training, loosely based in Dundee for specialist training in orthopaedics.  Fellowship training in children’s orthopaedics was divided between Montpellier, Metz, Paris, Adelaide and London before he finally settled to steady employment in the Northeast of England. Laurie Hiemstra

Dr. Hiemstra is a Fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon working in Banff, Canada.  She holds an Associate Professor appointment at the University of Calgary. The clinical and research program in Banff is focused on knee ligament injury, prevention of secondary injury, rehabilitation and surgical outcomes with an emphasis on ACL injury and reconstruction and patellofemoral instability. Laurie is on the Board of Directors of the Patellofemoral Foundation, Banff Sport Medicine Foundation, Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). Laurie has published over 75 peer-reviewed papers and is a national and international speaker. 

Laurie obtained her Medical Degree from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, completed an orthopaedic residency at the University of Manitoba, and a Clinical Fellowship in Orthopedic Sport Medicine at the University of Western Ontario. She also attained a PhD in Neuromuscular Physiology. Laurie has worked as an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Banff Sport Medicine since 2005. Her clinical focus is on patellofemoral instability and ACL reconstruction. 

Laurie is the Past-President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA, 2022-2023). Robert Hill

Robert Hill is Honorary Associate Professor at UCL and Medical Director of the Portland Hospital. Having qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, after training in Orthopaedics on the St Thomas Hospital Registrar rotation and the Pott rotation he was appointed Consultant at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. but for some years also undertook adult Orthopaedics. Caroline Hing

Pofessor of Orthopaedics, St George’s University, London

Caroline trained in Medicine at University College London with an intercalated BSc in Anatomy & Developmental Biology. She completed her Orthopaedic and Trauma training on the Pott Rotation based at Barts and The London Hospitals with a further period of training at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital whilst completing an MD, doctoral thesis on patellofemoral instability. She also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering awarded by the University of Wales. Her fellowships included trauma at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia and knee surgery at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals in London.

She has subspecialty interests in knee surgery, especially patellofemoral instability and in trauma. She is a Professor of orthopaedics at St George’s University London with research interests in osteoarthritis and trauma. She is a clinical director for corporate outpatients and she leads for research in orthopaedics in the trust. She is co-editor in chief of The Knee Journal. Simon Hodkinson

BOA President, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust

Simon trained in London at St Bartholomew’s Hospital from 1977-82.

He was a Royal Naval cadet as a medical student so after house jobs in London and the Navy he spent the next two and a half years on General Duties in the Royal Navy.

After a crash course in all sorts of medical disasters he might face at sea, he went to the Falklands and Antarctica for the best part of a year before spending the second year in general practice in a Naval base.

Simon started his surgical training within the Navy in 1986 and in 1990 joined the fledgling HEMS project at the London as one of the original three Drs flying on the helicopter.

His higher training took him out of the Navy to Edinburgh and Leeds before being appointed a Consultant in the Navy in 1995.

Deployments to Cyprus, Bosnia and the Gulf intermingled with his early career and he then left the Navy in 1999 to join the NHS in Portsmouth.

In the NHS he developed his fledgling interest in foot and ankle surgery, which rapidly became him chosen speciality as the department expanded.

After a period as clinical director in Portsmouth his interest in education started as the RCS Tutor and progressed to being the Training Programme Director for T&O in Wessex for 8 years and membership of the SAC for 5 years.

His involvement with the BOA began with being elected to the Training Standards Committee, as was and then the Education committee.

Elected as a Trustee in 2017 he became Honorary Secretary in 202O and then elected to the Presidential line in September 2021.

Phil is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. He has been in post for 15 years, working in one of the busiest arthroplasty and trauma units in the country. Si Horne is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Deputy Medical Director at University Hospitals Plymouth. He joined the Army while at Oxford and after deploying to Northern Ireland for three years began training in Emergency Medicine. Subsequently he has supported operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and South Sudan and served as EM lead for the Army. His main research interest is mass casualty management, but for the last 3 years he has been implementing military health development programmes worldwide as head of the Centre for Defence Engagement. Mr Neil Jain is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and the founder of UK Sports Medicine, a private practice focused on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries through innovation. Riem Johnson graduated from Leicester University and pursued basic and higher surgical training in the North East, where she was awarded an MD. Professor Kader is  a surgeon, researcher, academic, educationalist and humanitarian. After finishing the specialist registrar training in Scotland and knee fellowship in Sydney/Australia and Newcastle in 2005, he was appointed as  a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at the QEH NHS trust in Gateshead and became the team doctor for Newcastle United football club. This gave him an opportunity to care for professional athletes and obtain the membership of the faculty of sport and exercise medicine in the UK. In August 2015 he was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in complex knee surgery at South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) where he is now the acting director of research. Professor Kader is the current President of BOSTAA. Since 2010 professor Kader has been dedicating a significant amount of his time to humanitarian work with NGMV medical Volunteers and Life Academy (www.ngmvcharity.co.uk) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at their war wounded trauma reconstruction centre in Tripoli/Lebanon. Recently he has become the advisor and surgeon for Swisscross Foundation in Kurdistan/Iraq. Al-Amin undertook his higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in the South West Peninsula region. He was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2016.  
He undertook the prestigious complex and revision hip and knee fellowship at the world-renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford and returned to Exeter to become a Ling fellow within the Exeter hip unit. He was appointed as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Exeter Hip Unit in 2018. He specialises in complex primary and revision hip arthroplasty with a special interest in robotic surgery and spinopelvic syndrome. He was appointed Co-Clinical Lead of the South West Ambulatory Orthopaedic Centre (SWAOC) in February 2023.

Al-Amin is Chief Investigator for the HIPSTER (Hip Surgical Techniques to Enhance Rehabilitation) study which has been successful in being awarded an NIHR Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation grant to perform a randomised controlled trial assessing the impact of minimally invasive approaches for total hip arthroplasty.

Al-Amin is currently a mentor for the BHS Mentorship scheme which has been rewarding from a personal and professional point of view. This is something he continues to be part of, and learns a great deal from, as well as hopefully being able to give something back to, other aspiring and current Orthopaedic surgeons.

Michael Kelly

Mr Michael Kelly undertook his Orthopaedic training in Edinburgh with a fellowship in Vancouver specialising in trauma.

He was appointed to North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) in March 2009. His practice is trauma and hip and knee arthroplasty. He also helps lead the Orthoplastics service with Mr. Umraz Khan.

He was President of the OTS in 2020 to 2021.

Lt Col Andrew Kent

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Raigmore Hospital Surgical Lead, UK-Med

Andy is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon based at Raigmore Hospital, in Inverness. He moved to the Highlands in 2002 having retired from the British Army (RAMC) where his extensive military service included multiple tours in austere and hostile environments. Alongside his busy NHS practice, he has developed a strong interest in training surgeons to deliver trauma care in resource-poor settings. His work with the WHO, AO Trauma, the Primary Trauma Care Foundation, the HALO Trust, UK-Med and the RCSEd has seen him deliver training and working throughout Africa, the Middle East and Far East.

He has taken on a voluntary role as Surgical Lead for UK-Med and the UK Emergency Medical Team reacting to both natural and man-made disasters. He deployed with the UKEMT recce team to Beirut following the explosion in 2020 and has recently led an emergency surgical response to eastern Ukraine following the Russian invasion.

As vice-chair of the Faculty of Remote, Rural & Humanitarian Healthcare (FRRHH) at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, he brings a wealth of clinical experience to the committee with multiple direct links to partners in the humanitarian sector.

He was awarded the Tuanku Muhriz Travelling Fellowship in Rural Surgery and has travelled extensively through Borneo to assess and promote the delivery of pre-hospital trauma care and damage control surgery.

Andy was recently awarded the OBE in the New Year Honours List for services to UK health support overseas, particularly in Ukraine.

Cronan Kerin

Mr Cronan Kerin is a Consultant Knee & Trauma Surgeon in the Liverpool University Hospital Teaching Hospital Major Trauma Centre. After graduating from St Andrews and Manchester Universities medical programme Mr Kerin spent his early medical career in the Lancashire region. He then undertook his Higher Surgical Training on the prestigious Oswestry Orthopaedic Training programme. Following his Higher Surgical Training Mr Kerin undertook fellowship training in knee surgery at Aintree University Hospital and Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. His training was further enhanced by fellowships in America, Germany and Northern Ireland.

Mr Kerin is recognised an excellent trainer and is currently an honorary senior lecturer post at the University of Liverpool and the regional Training Programme Director. He is current  Chair of Selection Design Group Trauma & Orthopaedics National Selection and an examiner for the FRCS (Tr & Orth). Mr Kerin is regularly invited to teach at national and international meetings, training juniors and other Consultants on arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction of the knee and knee replacement and trauma surgery.

Hui-Ling Kerr

Miss Kerr is an orthopaedic spine consultant working in Gloucestershire. Her practise is in adult degenerative spine as well as general orthopaedics. She did her undergraduate degree at St Mary’s Medical School, in London and orthopaedic training in the Severn Deanery. Before taking up her consultant position, she completed spine fellowships in London Ontario, Canada as well as Cardiff, Wales.

Miss Kerr has an interest in equal opportunities in surgery, plus factors relating to the recruitment and retention of trainees in spine surgery. She is a member of the BOA diversity focus group, as well as is the Membership secretary for the British Association of Spinal Surgeons, the first female spine surgeon to be elected to the BASS executive council. She organised and chaired the first Women in Spine Education (WISE) meeting in the UK held in 2022 and a further meeting is planned in December 2023. She lives in Gloucester with her partner Sarah and their dog called Dorothy.

Vikas Khanduja

Vikas Khanduja is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in both preservation and arthroplasty aspects of hip surgery and has a particular interest in arthroscopic surgery of the hip. He has been instrumental in setting up the tertiary referral service for Young Adult Hip Surgery in Cambridge for East of England.

Complementing his clinical practice, he also leads the Cambridge Young Adult Hip Research Group and is Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge. The focus of his research group centres around optimisation of conservative and surgical management of femoroacetabular impingement with the help of technology. Mr. Khanduja has authored over 200 peer reviewed articles and 3 books.

Mr. Khanduja is the recipient of the American and British Hip Society Travelling Fellowship in 2011, the Arnott Medal presented by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2013, the Insall Fellowship presented by the American Knee Society and Insall Foundation in 2014 and the Hunterian Professor by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2021.  

Mr. Khanduja sits on the Executive Board of SICOT as President Elect, of BOA as a Council Member and Trustee & is the Associate Editor in Chief to JISAKOS. He is the Past President of the British Hip Society, Past Chair of the ESSKA - European Hip Preservation Associates and a Trustee and Past Chair of the Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry.

Nigel Kiely

Mr. Preetham Kodumuri graduated from Guntur, South India in 2006. He undertook basic surgical training in the East Midlands and completed orthopaedic training (CCT) in Nottingham and Derby in 2018. He further trained as a hand surgery fellow (ATP fellowship) in Manchester and Birmingham. In 2019, he was awarded the British and European Hand Surgery Diplomas. Julie Kohls

Julie Kohls is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in Foot and Ankle. Born and raised in Canada, she qualified in medicine at the University of Western Ontario in 1996 and then joined the Orthopaedic surgery training program at the University of Toronto. After arriving in London in 1999, she transferred her training to the London North West training program. In 2007 Julie became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS (Tr & Orth)). 

Julie trained in Foot and Ankle surgery during a year at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore and then completed a second year as the Surrey Foot and Ankle Fellow (working at both the Royal Surrey County Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital). Julie was awarded her CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) in 2008. 

Outside of her Foot and Ankle Surgical Practice, she is also involved in Education. Julie has a Masters Degree in Surgical Education (M. Ed) from the University of Toronto. In the NHS, She is the Foundation Year 1 Program Director for the 59 most junior doctors at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. Julie enjoys teaching all aspects of Foot and Ankle Surgery and she is an active member of BOFAS.

Shivam Kolhe

Dr Shiv Kolhe is an Academic Foundation Doctor at Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trusts, with a keen interest in Trauma and Orthopaedic (T&O) surgery. From the early stages of medical school, Dr Kolhe has been driven by a passion for T&O surgery, consistently striving to excel in clinical research, leadership, management, and medical education.

Dr Kolhe's contributions within the T&O community are evident through his roles on national organisations including the British Hip Society (BHS), the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), and the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA). He has led several national initiatives to address issues of diversity, inclusion, and visibility, particularly in relation to the lack of exposure to T&O surgery and education during medical school. In his efforts to improve opportunities and exposure to orthopaedic surgery, Dr Kolhe co-founded the British Orthopaedic Medical Students Association (BOMSA) which successfully gained formal BOA and BOTA affiliation and integrated with over 95% of UK medical schools in its inaugural year. Under his leadership, BOMSA continues to grow, and offers valuable personal and professional development opportunities for numerous medical students enabling them to engage with the specialty and the wider orthopaedic community at local, regional, and national levels.

Clare graduated from the University of Manchester in 2000, having completed a BSc at St Andrews University. She worked as an anatomy demonstrator at Cambridge University and in Orthopaedics in New Zealand before completing Basic and Higher Surgical Training in the Wessex region.

Clare was appointed to the ATP hand fellowship in Oxford in 2016; gaining completion of this, her CCT in Tr and Orth and the Diploma in hand Surgery (Manchester University) in 2017. She completed an AO trauma fellowship in Dussledorf in 2017.

Clare moved with her family to the Midlands to start work as a Hand and Wrist consultant at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire in June 2017. She is currently the educational Lead for the T&O department and lead for the LTFTT in the trust and therefore actively involved in working with the West Midlands deanery. Chris Lavy

Chris Lavy is professor of Orthopaedics and Tropical Surgery and an honorary consultant in Spinal Surgery at Oxford.  He trained as a GP before seeing the light and moving to orthopaedics.  His passion is building training institutions that benefit the less well resourced parts of the world and he has helped build 3 orthopaedic hospitals in Africa and set up COSECSA, the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa. He is also devoted to improving training in UK and is an elected council member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.  He writes regularly and has just edited a book on Cauda Equina Syndrome. He plays tennis and squash and like many middle aged men regrets taking on a 20 year old last year and tearing his Achilles tendon.

Bertie Leigh is a consultant solicitor at Hempsons.  He has a very extensive experience in medical negligence and in the law related to professional regulation. He has been described as the top dog in defence medical negligence. He has had numerous senior rolls in the legal world, but also has had a close relationship with surgery and orthopaedics. He was the chairman of NCEPOD for 6 years and is a non executive director of the RNOH at Stanmore. There are few, if any other, lawyers, who understand the issues that orthopaedic surgeons face on a day to day basis any better.

Alex Liddle

Mr Liddle is a Clinical Senior Lecturer based at the MSk lab at Imperial College London and is a Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He undertook his orthopaedic training on the North West Thames and Stanmore Orthopaedic rotations, the latter as NIHR Senior Lecturer at the UCL Institute of Orthopaedics. During his training, he completed a DPhil in Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Prof. David Murray, Prof. Richie Gill, Prof. Andrew Judge and Prof. Hemant Pandit focusing on surgical, patient and implant factors to improve the outcomes of partial knee replacement. His research interests revolve around the use of technology and data to improve the outcomes of arthroplasty surgery, including outcomes research, basic science and implant design and testing. He is currently Chief Clinical Officer of OSSTEC, a spinout developing a novel implant platform based on technology developed in collaboration with the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College.

Ignatius Liew

Ignatius Liew is currently an orthopaedic registrar in the East of England, with an interest in joint preservation surgery. He is the recipient of the Joint Orthopaedic Research Fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and ORUK. Ignatius will be starting his MPhil/PhD at University of Cambridge and University of Oxford, working with the musculoskeletal Human Cell Atlas. 

Ignatius is the current British Orthopaedic Trainees Association academic representative and past committee of Orthopaedic Research Collaborative east Anglia (ORCA). Claudia uses methods from computer vision, machine learning and data science to develop automatic systems for analysing structures in medical images, aiming to transform clinically collected image data into useful medical information. Andrew Manktelow

Trained at the Royal Free and the RNOH, Andrew headed to the East Midlands and to Nottingham in 1999. Part of a busy trauma group for many years, his practice is now based around hip surgery. His clinical interest started in London and developed during a year in Boston, at MGH. Away from his hips, the scope of his unit has allowed Andrew a continued understanding of the issues that excite and confront other areas of orthopaedic practice.

His clinical work provides research opportunities and forms the basis of his educational activities. Andrew has travelled widely to lecture and demonstrate his practice, and he set up the Nottingham Revision Course in 2007. His recent work with the Revision Surgery Network, which provides a weekly framework for surgeons from different hospitals to meet ‘virtually’ to discuss complex cases, has received attention nationally and internationally.

Andrew has been on the Executive of the British Hip Society for a number of years and became President in March 2018. His year gave him a better appreciation of the challenges of today’s health economic environment. He saw how the BOA facilitates discussion and provides a cohesive response to support what good orthopaedics achieves for our patients.

Married to Claire, a GP and with four beautiful and tolerant daughters aged between 21 and 14, Andrew has little time to spare away from my work. When quiet he enjoys travelling, music, gardening, (watching) sport and planning future revisions.

Surg Cdr Steve Mannion

Steve Mannion, MA MChir DTM&H DMCC FRCS (Tr & Orth) RD is Head of the Department of Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine at St George’s, University of London, combining this with a part time appointments as an NHS consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Blackpool and Preston. For up to 6 months a year he also undertakes orthopaedic education and training projects in the less developed world and has extensive experience in humanitarian surgical projects in conflict areas, including Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. He has established clubfoot treatment projects in many less developed countries and is Medical Director of the Global Clubfoot Initiative. Steve is a lead clinician in the UK response to International Disasters and past Chairman of World Orthopaedic Concern (UK).

Jo Marsden

As consultant breast surgeon at King's College Hospital, London, I developed the first UK day case pathway for breast surgery. This resulted in more than 90% of patients being discharged safely on the same day, including women who had mastectomies without impacting adversely on cancer treatment waiting times. This was identified as an exemplar of care, recommended as best practice by The Department of Health and informed the introduction of Best Practice Tariffs for day case breast surgery. This stimulated my interest in spreading excellence in day surgery practice and I was elected to the British Association of Day Surgery (BADS) Council in 2015. I became publications editor in 2016, President in 2021 and have been the Immediate Past President since June 2023.

Kiri’s research focuses on nutrition in older adults with sarcopenia.  Her most recent work explored hospital food waste and the role of a muscle-targeted ice cream nutritional supplement called Nottingham-Ice Cream (N-ICE Cream) to manage malnutrition in older adults with fragility fractures.

Stuart Matthews

Retired Consultant Trauma Surgeon Leeds General Infirmary, Director TLA Medicolegal

Stuart Matthews has been a consultant surgeon specialising in major trauma and the complications of the same for all of his consultant career with 18 years of military service and 27 years in the NHS in Leeds and in Oxford in major Trauma Units. He is cofounder of TLA Medicolegal, a medicolegal chambers formed in 2005. He has practiced as an expert witness for personal injury since 1989 and clinical negligence since 1994. He has also taken instructions for criminal cases. His clinical practice is now confined to providing second opinions. 

Donald McBride

Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon, University Hospital, North Midlands

Don McBride has been a full time Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at the University Hospital of North Midlands, Stoke on Trent UK for 25 years. He has been involved with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at Keele University and at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Memorial Hospital, Oswestry. He has research interests across the field of Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery. He was previously President of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (2006) and is currently a co-opted Council member as their EFAS Representative (2010-23). He has been Honorary Treasurer and Secretary of the European Foot and Ankle Society, Honorary Treasurer of the British Orthopaedic Association (2015-17) and a Past President of the BOA (2019-20). He is currently Immediate Past President of EFAS, Chairman of the Certification Board of EFAS, and a Council Member of the International Federation of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. With EFORT he has been a representative as President of a National Society (BOA 2018-21), a member of the EFORT Nominating Committee (2020-21), a National Representative on UEMS (2018-21), a member of the European Subspecialist Society Committee (2020-21) and is currently a member of the EFORT Education Committee.

He has been a Clinical Adviser to the National Health Service Ombudsman for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and a Specialty Adviser to NICE. With NICE he contributed as an Orthopaedic Subgroup Member to the development and implementation of NICE policy guidelines on VTE in 2010 and 2018. He was a collaborating member of the International Consensus Statement on VTE in 2021-22 (Parvizi).

Bevin McCartan

Consultant in sport and exercise medicine and a club doctor

Dr Bevin McCartan is a consultant in sport and exercise medicine and a club doctor for Liverpool football club. Bevin has specialised in orthopaedics and emergency medicine and has a wealth of experience in the role.

Before coming to LFC she worked for Fulham FC as their academy and tunnel doctor, and previous roles include club doctor at Harlequins women rugby team, doctor at the institute of sport and exercise health looking after Team GB and doing clinics there.

Bevin also worked with the FA looking after England Women U23s and was on an medical advisory board with the Rugby Football Union.

She got her medical qualification in 2003 from Queen’s University, Belfast, having trained as an orthopaedic surgeon for eight years working in Northern Ireland, before going to work in Australia and then London.

Bevin then did a year of orthopaedic research before changing careers into emergency medicine and spent six years training in the major trauma centres in London.

Previous roles include a working doctor at the ATP Tennis, athletics, Run to the Beat and triathlons in London. She also worked at the London marathon as an elite athlete doctor and at the IAAF world athletics as field of play doctor, and was also the doctor at the Invictus Games.
